Promising filly Satono Glow strengthened her claims for Group 1 glory this spring with a stylish victory in Saturday’s 2026 Roman Consul Stakes results at Rosehill, continuing her outstanding record and earning a return trip to Melbourne for the Group 1 $2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on VRC Derby Day, October 31.

The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained daughter of Satono Aladdin started a well-backed $2.60 favourite in the Group 2 $300,000 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) and produced another polished performance under Zac Lloyd, sweeping home out wide to defeat Steel Will by 1½ lengths, with Why So Hard a neck away in third.

The victory improved her record to four wins from five starts and added to an already impressive résumé that includes earlier Group 3 victories in the Cap D’Antibes Stakes and Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Flemington.

O’Shea was full of praise for the progressive filly, believing she measured up strongly against quality opposition and had further enhanced her Coolmore credentials.

“She’s a very good filly,” he told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“He’s a good colt (Paradoxium) so for her to run him down, it was a big effort.

“We wanted to see where we fit in, she’s ticked every box so far, and this race traditionally has always provided good form for the Coolmore.”

Bookmakers at Ladbrokes have cut the Coolmore Stud Stakes odds on Satono Glow from $11 to $5 to claim the Group 1 on Derby Day!

The leading trainer explained the decision to keep the filly in Sydney this preparation before targeting Melbourne’s premier three-year-old sprint.

“We wanted to bring her home, keep her under our eye, and that was the rationale behind that,” O’Shea added.

“I thought she did a good job first-up and then she has had a little tick-over trial.”

With the 2026 Coolmore Stud Stakes now firmly in sight, O’Shea is confident the campaign has unfolded perfectly to date.

“It has all worked nicely so far so hopefully we can have a good next three weeks and turn up in Melbourne to give a good account of herself,” he added.

“We put together a syndicate of people to buy five fillies (each season) under the guidance of James Bester.

“No one knows more than about fillies than James. He has bought Hips Don’t Lie among some other great fillies. He has helped us select this filly and a couple of others. They have done really well over the last couple of years and now they have got a real good one.”

Winning jockey Zac Lloyd was equally impressed with the filly’s professionalism and natural ability.

“She is pretty smart,” he said.

“As you see in the Mounting Yard and after the race, so professional, knows her job. It is half the battle. The other half is ability and she has a lot of it.”

Lloyd said he was always confident Satono Glow could reel in the leaders despite circling the field down the Rosehill straight.

“I was yes. At the pace they went, I was able to get into a spot. I thought if I could get her, I could win,” he explained.

“Obviously it is hard coming the widest around Rosehill and picking up pretty good horses like Paradoxium but once I brought her out, picked her up, she was coming pretty quick.”

The Roman Consul Stakes has long been a key Coolmore Stud Stakes lead-up, and bookmakers were quick to react to her latest success with Ladbrokes slashing Satono Glow’s Coolmore Stud Stakes 2026 odds from $11 into $5, elevating her to the second line of betting for the Flemington feature behind only Danehill Stakes winning colt The Next Episode.

Recent winners of the Roman Consul Stakes – Coolmore Stud Stakes double include Brazen Beau (2014), Zoustar (2013) and Switzerland (2024).

With four wins from five starts, proven stakes-class form in both Sydney and Melbourne, and a professionalism that belies her experience, Satono Glow is rapidly emerging as one of the standout three-year-old sprinters of the season. Her dominant Roman Consul Stakes victory suggests she will head to Flemington as a genuine contender for Coolmore Stud Stakes success.
