A capacity field of autumn sprinters faces off in The Goodwood 2022 this weekend in Adelaide and it’s a tight top-half of the markets with Extreme Warrior one of the best in betting.

Last weekend Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr celebrated a Group 1 win in South Australia with Tarzino gelding Jungle Magnate taking out the SA Derby.
This Saturday all eyes are on their emerging Extreme Choice colt Extreme Warrior who takes on the older horses in the Group 1 $502,250 The Furphy Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.
Drawn out wide in barrier 13 in the 20-starter The Goodwood field, the gun three-year-old has Jamie Kah aboard for the ride on 53.5kg.
Out to be the first three-year-old The Goodwood winner since the filly Lone Rock back in 2011, Extreme Warrior is currently the $6.50 co-favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au.
He has had seven starts to date for three wins and two second placings, the latest seeing him carry 54kg to victory as the short-priced favourite in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on April 23.
Prior to that, he was somewhat disappointing when 10th down the famous Flemington straight behind Home Affairs in last October’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
With the stable in the right vein of form in Adelaide this season, and Extreme Warrior fitter second heading back to Group 1 grade, he looks a genuine chance to salute for the punters.
The other runner currently sharing top spot in The Goodwood betting for 2022 is the in-form In The Boat for Lindsey Smith.
A four-year-old son of Nostradamus, he is a seven-time winner from 11 starts and undefeated with a perfect three-from-three record over the 1200m.
In The Boat rises in grade coming off back-to-back wins in Victoria, the first a one length success in the Listed Abell Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley before victory in the Discover (1100m) at Sale by nearly three lengths in mid-April.
Despite drawing right out in gate 20 and going up from 54kg to 57kg, the bookies are taken no chances and are keeping the up-and-comer safe in the markets.
Also at single-figures to become this season’s The Goodwood winner is South Australian stalwart, the popular David Jolly-trained Behemoth at $8.
The now six-year-old son of All Too Hard was runner-up in the 2019 The Goodwood, fourth in 2020 behind Trekking and seventh last year to Savatoxl.
A triple Group 1 winner in Melbourne over 1400m, Behemoth gets his chance to return to winning form for the first time since his second Group 1 Memsie Stakes success at Caulfield last August in an open edition of the classic.
Rounding out the runners under $10 The Goodwood odds is then The Inferno ($9) for Mornington trainer Cliff Brown.
The lightly-raced six-year-old has just his 17th career start on Saturday and is chasing a 10th win.
He boasts an outstanding record over the distance (9:6-1-0) and made his Morphettville debut on May 7 when third only a quarter-length behind Free Of Debt in the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m).
Chris Bieg’s local DC McKay Stakes winner Free Of Debt backs-up in the Group 1 on the weekend, the five-year-old paying a generous $34 to do the double Savatoxl (2021) completed last year.
Savatoxl also returns looking to become just the third horse in history to go back-to-back in The Goodwood along with Mostyn (1894–95) and Musket Belle (1911–12).
Tony & Calvin McEvoy’s defending champion looked back to his better form in the DC McKay Stakes when beaten in a photo carrying 60kg.
He comes back to 58.5kg here and is drawn barrier seven, looking an overlooked runner at $17.
Other notable The Goodwood horses this year include the autumn’s Newmarket Handicap runner-up The Astrologist ($15) and the classy Bella Nipotina ($17) from the Maher/Eustace stable.
Note: The Chris Waller-trained #3 September Run (18) has been scratched from The Goodwood field paving the way for the sole emergency, three-year-old Manhattan Times, to gain a start.
