Richard Litt’s progressive Deep Impact colt Profondo was excellent saluting for the Sydney punters in the 2021 Spring Champion Stakes results at just his third career start.

There was plenty of money on the untapped youngster to win at the highest level as Profondo went out at $2.80 in the Group 1 $1 million Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).
He was good in his lead-up when runner-up in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) and was so strong going up the extra distance to post a dominant two length victory that left his trainer speechless.
“He’s left me speechless,” Litt said.
“We’ve had a wonderful two weeks with him. We have come here today, he was very relaxed, and gee the world is his oyster. It’s scary. We’re very excited.”
Jockey Robbie Dolan retained the ride in the Group 1 and had Profondo settled nicely second the outside of the front-running filly Never Been Kissed.
Looking to emulate Montefilia from last spring, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Never Been Kissed came off an upset win in the Group 1 Flight Stakes over the mile.
She was good out the gates when taking on the colts and geldings in the Spring Champion Stakes and jockey Regan Bayliss took her into the lead up on the fence.
With 400m left to travel, the Godolphin-raced Alegron presented as a threat peeling out three-wide, while the Gloaming Stakes winner Head Of State was never in a winning position well back in the field.
At the 350m Profondo raced out to lead, Never Been Kissed so brave trying her hardest to match him stride-for-stride before the eventual winner pulled away for what was an easy win in the end.
Never Been Kissed held for second, while Alegron finished off the Spring Champion Stakes trifecta in a nice third.
Litt was quick to credit the lovely ride by Dolan before confirmed Profondo would now head out to the paddock ahead of a big 2022 autumn campaign next year.
“Absolutely. I am extremely proud of him. He has done a wonderful job, Robbie,” he said.
“He is a wonderful person, a wonderful jockey, and he’s done a wonderful job there.
“He rolled outside the leader and I was about to have a heart attack but he knew what he was doing. He knew what the horse can do and he had great faith. We’re just very, very proud of him.
“He (Profondo) will go to the paddock now, I think.
“He will have a nice spell and we are going to have a big attack come the autumn. He’s got some amazing races coming up. He’s very exciting.”
The third placed Alegron meanwhile could press onto Melbourne’s Group 1 $2 million Victoria Derby (2500m) on October 30 at Flemington and is into $15 in the pre-field markets at Ladbrokes.com.au -available in full here.
