The weather in Melbourne sees scattered showers and the potential for heavier afternoon rainfall on the radar, and following 30mm of rain over the past 24 hours there is a current Soft (7) Moonee Valley track rating.

Moonee Valley racing gets underway at 12:30pm (AEST) and the exciting nine-race card continues through until 5:25pm (AEST).

There are four Black-Type races on the card including a double-shot of Group racing starting with Race 5 at 2:50pm (AEST) when a small but class field of sprinters do battle in the Group 2 $300,000 McEwen Stakes (1000m) led by Oakleigh Plate winner Portland Sky.

Of the Listed races on the card there’s a stellar field gathered for the Listed $160,000 Ladbrokes Chautauqua Stakes (1200m) running as Race 7 at 4:10pm (AEST) where the one-time favourite and widely-drawn class mare Away Game is the notable scratching.

The meeting’s marquee race is the Group 2 $500,000 Feehan Stakes (1600m) – formerly the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes – now worth half a million dollars and offering the winner a ballot free ride into the $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate in October.

Danny O’Brien’s The Valley specialist Sovereign Award has been scratched from the 2021 Feehan Stakes field leaving 13 Cox Plate hopefuls led in betting by the undefeated, rails-drawn Kiwi Elephant.
