Turnbull Stakes Day 2020 headlines the racing action in Melbourne today, Saturday October 3, and below we have a look at the latest Flemington race scratchings and track report at HQ ahead of the first.
The weather in Melbourne today is sunny and windy meaning the current Good (4) Flemington track rating looks set to stay across the afternoon.
Flemington racing gets underway at 12:05pm (AEST) with all nine races on the card holding Black-Type status.
First-up the two-year-olds face off in the Listed $175,000 Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m), a field of nine remaining led in betting by General Beau ($1.80 @ Ladbrokes.com.au).
In race two it is the three-year-olds’ turn for the Listed $175,000 Poseidon Stakes (1100m) where the Chris Waller-trained September Run ($2.15 @ Ladbrokes.com.au) four out wide is the clear pick from the nine remaining chances.
In the third the middle-distance types do battle in the Listed $175,000 Paris Lane Stakes (1400m) where Group 1 winner Begood Toya Mother ($4.80 @ Ladbrokes.com.au) is tipped to enjoy a huge drop in grade.
The first of the Group status races on the program runs as Race 4 with the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) for the potential The Everest 2020 horses with Tofane ($2.90 @ Ladbrokes.com.au) – already confirmed for the world’s richest turf race on October 17 in Sydney – leads the markets.
A bumper line-up of VRC Oaks-bound fillies are engaged in Race 5 with no scratchings in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes, betting for which has the Godolphin-raced Thermosphere ($4 @ Ladbrokes.com.au) on top.
Plenty of eyes will be on Race 6 at 3:05pm (AEST) with a ballot exemption for the $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup is on offer in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings – six out of the event and odds firming on the favourite Shared Ambition ($4.60 @ Ladbrokes.com.au) for Waller.
The day’s feature race is of course Flemington Race 7 with all 15 original acceptors still in the mix for the Group 1 $500,000 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) where Verry Elleegant ($5 @ Ladbrokes.com.au) and Surprise Baby ($5.50 @ Ladbrokes.com.au) are engaged in a two-way battle for favouritism.
Three have come out of the next with the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes field – formerly the Blazer Stakes – a wide open affair where WA’s Perfect Jewel ($4.80 @ Ladbrokes.com.au) holds narrow favouritism.
The nine-race card then comes to a close at 5:05pm (AEST) with the Listed $175,000 Super Impose Stakes (1800m).
