Danny O’Brien’s Cox Plate-bound four-year-old Russian Camelot will jump the odds-on favourite from barrier nine of 10 in Saturday’s 2020 Underwood Stakes field at Caulfield Racecourse.
The SA Derby winning son of Camelot races in the Group 1 $750,000 Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes (1800m) second-up and is looking to improve on his second to Fierce Impact in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).
With Fierce Impact a non-acceptor for the rematch in the Underwood, Russian Camelot dominates post-acceptance betting on the weight-for-age clash at $1.95 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Jockey Damien Oliver chases his first Underwood win since guiding Fred Kersley’s great galloper Northerly to the first of two wins in 2001 and continues his spring association with Russian Camelot in the race.
The entire is also favourite for the $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley on October 24 and a win on the weekend will see him firm further in all-in markets for the 100th edition of the event.
Two other runners are currently under double-figures in the Underwood Stakes odds online with Grant & Alana Williams’ Group 1 winning mare from WA Arcadia Queen ($5) and the Phillip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie ($7.50) drawn the outside alley.
Winner of the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic over the same distance (1800m) as a filly, Pierro mare Arcadia Queen has had a hit-and-miss past couple of seasons due to ongoing hoof issues.
She looked improved second-up at Flemington on September 12 running second to Pretty Brazen in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m), the winner of which ran third to Behemoth in last weekend’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
Mr Quickie will be ridden by Damian Lane in the Underwood, the Shamus Award five-year-old coming off a first-up second in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m), also won by Behemoth, from August 29.
For value, the now Chris Waller-trained dual Cox Plate placegetter Humidor pays $14 to continue his fairy tale spring after winning the Group 2 Feehan Stakes at The Valley in his first ever first-up success as an eight-year-old.
After opting to save his Makybe Diva Stakes winner Fierce Impact for a run in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) over further at Flemington on October 3, trainer Matthew Williams is still in the mix for the Underwood with Harbour Views ($11).
The French-bred Le Harve gelding is lightly-raced having won six of his 11 runs to date and comes off a close third only a half-length off Humidor in the Feehan over the mile on September 5.
Kiwi galloper The Chosen One is also paying $11 in Underwood Stakes markets after drawing well in barrier two, the in-form Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained Savabeel entire coming off a first-up Flemington win over 1700m when carting 61.5kg to victory on September 12.
