John Thompson’s reigning champion and subsequent Group 1 winner Dreamforce is tipped to successfully defend his title as race favourite in the Tramway Stakes 2020 betting markets for Saturday at Royal Randwick.
Twelve months ago, the Fastnet Rock gelding enjoyed a three-length romp home first-up in the Group 2 $200,000 Tramway Stakes (1400m) before finishing second to Avilius next start in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m).
The now eight-year-old was in strong form over the autumn winning the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at elite level at Rosehill and is tipped to post his first win since that March victory on the weekend.
He heads into the Tramway Stakes field this year second-up off a disappointing return when 15th, beating home just one rival in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) from August 22.
Dreamforce had no luck from a wide gate (14 of 16) there and presents fitter for the Tramway where he comes down in grade and weight.
Drawn in barrier seven of 11 with his George Ryder winning hoop Nash Rawiller coming back aboard, the veteran is the narrow $4.20 favourite in the Tramway Stakes markets at Ladbrokes.com.au as he looks to go back-to-back in the event for the first time since Grenoble (1959-60).
Hot on his heels at Tramway Stakes odds of $5 is the Toby & Trent Edmonds-trained second elect, resuming Group 2 The Roses winner Vanna Girl.
The consistent daughter of Husson went out a four-time winner on the trot thanks to an outstanding Queensland Winter Carnival that culminated with her win from out wide at Eagle Farm in the Group 2 The Roses (1800m) in mid-June.
She races for the first time since in her interstate debut and is being kept safe in betting despite drawing the outside alley (11) for jockey Jason Collett.
Also kicking off her four-year-old campaign in the Tramway Stakes is the $7.50 third favourite, Godolphin’s returning Group 1 ATC Oaks champion Colette.
Drawn the rails first-up on Saturday, the talented daughter of Hallowed Crown is also after her fifth consecutive win having won four straight last time in.
Two back she won the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) before a big 2.5 length win in the Oaks over the mile and a half, and is at a conservative price for the Tramway despite likely needing further.
At a current quote of $9.50 in the Tramway odds is the last of the single-figure fancies, the Chris Waller-trained Reloaded drawn well in gate three.
James McDonald, winner of the 2016 edition aboard Hauraki for John O’Shea, partners the Snitzel four-year-old first-up as the entire looks to win for the first time since his successful debut back in April of 2019.
Despite being winless since, Reloaded has been competitive in plenty of tough assignments including a Group 1 JJ Atkins third that winter.
His autumn was also full of frustrating minor placings including his second in the Group 2 Hobartville, fourth in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and third in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas.
