Golden Rose Odds Firm on The Rosebud 2020 Winner Anders

Bookies have halved the all-in price on Anders to win the 2020 Golden Rose Stakes this season after the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained colt returned in emphatic fashion winning the Listed $140,000 The Rosebud (1100m) in a demolition job on Saturday.

The well-bred son of Not A Single Doubt was in a class of his own first-up in The Rosebud on Missile Stakes Day, jockey Jason Collett guiding him to an all-too-easy four length win over the also resuming Group 1 Champagne Stakes placegetter last time out Ole Kirk from the Hawkes Racing stable.

Anders went out a back-to-back winner in May and was faultless fresh in The Rosebud ahead of the Group 1 spring majors.

The Rosebud is a traditional lead-up into the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) held on September 26 back at Rosehill.

Futures 2020 Golden Rose markets firmed on Anders in from $67 to $31 through Ladbrokes.com.au after The Rosebud results, but Collett believes the horse may be better suited to the shorter distanced sprint races over the coming months.

“He was very impressive,” Collett said.

“He’s a beautiful animal. He’s a proper horse.

“He’s a short-trip horse, 1200 he’ll get away with…he may get further in time.”

A potential target shapes up as Flemington’s Group 1 $1.5 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the straight on VRC Derby Day, however there remains a chance Anders could fill a slot in the $15 million The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 17.

Just two of the 12 The Everest horses have been confirmed ahead of the world’s richest turf race and Anders’ owners, Aquis Farm, are one of the slot holders still to name their contender.

Golden Slipper winner Farnan is on the front-line to fill the position, but they are sure to be giving serious consideration now to Anders after the brilliant first-up showing.

“I think he is too brilliant for a Golden Rose,” stable rep Annabel Neasham, only a week away from leaving the team to kick-off her own training career, said.

“I think he is very, very good and we will just see where they go with him now. I think they will go San Domenico and then see where he measures up.

“His backers have a slot in The Everest so you never know.

“He is very fast and is probably too brilliant for the Golden Rose but there is always the Coolmore as well.

“I am sure they will aim high.”

The Group 3 $160,000 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) runs back at Rosehill on August 29.

Eye-catching runner-up in The Rosebud, Ole Kirk is a $26 shot for the Golden Rose, while the third-placed Gerald Ryan-trained market mover The Face could also target the Group 1 next month.

Anders was first-up of the barriers in the Listed feature and after an early speed battle with The Face, took up front running.

From there he dictated the race, Collett keeping the horse well-balanced before asking him to lift once on the straight.

The favourite responded beautifully getting out well clear of his rivals and was ultra-impressive sprinting to the line on the Heavy track.

“He’s a proper colt that’s for sure,” Neasham told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“They’re going to have some fun with him.

“He’s fast isn’t he?

“He’s always worked like he’s one of the best. He’s just really developed. We’ve always known he’s got an awful lot of ability.

“He was beautifully relaxed and I loved the way he stretched to the line.

“Aquis have another great colt on their hands. I’d love to take him with me!”

Anders is now installed as a $31 chance in futures The Everest betting online available here.
