James McDonald has ridden a double at Rosehill aboard talented Kiwi-bred galloper Night’s Watch in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m).
The champion jockey had to practice patience after getting away from the gates slowly but did enormously well to weave his way from the back of the pack to win narrowly by a nose at the line.
Night’s Watch went around as an $8.00 pop on the soft track as punters came in droves for the favourite Life Less Ordinary. Maid Of Ore and House Of Cartier also saw some late money, but the six-year-old Night’s Watch proved too classy in the end winning a three-way tussle over Aliferous and Shadow Flight down the straight.
“It was a genuine speed throughout and they maintained a good speed. It wasn’t start-stop. That suited my fella, especially being back where we were, albeit I was probably on the worst part of the track, but he felt like he was getting through it,” McDonald told Sky Racing.
Another run over the 2000m is next on the cards for Night’s Watch in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 11. Despite the win, Chris Waller’s gelding has only firmed from $101 into $81 in the race with many proven stayers like Addeybb and Te Akau Shark nominated.
“It was very good. It was a very smart ride from James (McDonald), saving some ground. Even though he was back last, he spent nothing really and it was good to see him in winning form,” Waller said of Saturday’s win.
Night’s Watch has raced nine times at Group 1 level and placed only once in last year’s Toorak Handicap at Caulfield. He now sets out to become the first horse since Iko in 1980 to accomplish the Neville Sellwood – Queen Elizabeth double, while Waller out to win his fourth consecutive Queen Elizabeth after mighty mare Winx accomplished the three-peat last year.
