Fifteen horses has been nominated for the first Group 1 of the 2018 Melbourne Spring Carnival and include Group 1 winners Black Heart Bart, Humidor, Grunt, Happy Clapper, Hartnell and Kementari.
Vega Magic was an all the way winner of the 2017 Memsie Stakes and the six year old gelding is in fine form to make it back to back wins after scoring a very impressive first up win in the Group 3 $150,000 The Big Screen Company Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on July 28.
“He’s going great,” Lindsay Park’s head trainer David Hayes told AAP.
“He had a cruisy gallop on Thursday and he’ll have another gallop on Monday.
“I think he’s very similar to last year, if not better.
“His form, you won’t get better than the other day, the way he won. And nothing has gone wrong since.”
Victoria’s premiership winning trained Darren Weir has entered five horses for the Memsie Stakes and as well as Black Heart Bart and Humidor, has nominated imports Danon Liberty, Kings Will Dream and Red Cardinal.
James Cummings’ war horse Hartnell is also nominated for the Memsie Stakes and is coming off a first up second to Showtime in the Group 2 $200,000 Sir John Monash P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 18.
Cummings has also nominated Kementari who was beaten just over three lengths last start when fourth to Winx in the Group 1 $500,000 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on August 18.
The Team Hawkes trained Showtime will get his chance for back to back Caulfield wins while several of the runners that finished behind him in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes will get their chance to reverse the placings.
One of those who will be trying to add to his Group 1 tally in the Memsie Stakes is the Mick Price trained Grunt who was only beaten one length when fifth to Showtime in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes.
Other notable entry is the Pat Webster trained Happy Clapper who will be stepping out for the first time for the 2018 Spring Carnival in the Memsie Stakes.
Happy Clapper had a very successful Sydney Autumn Carnival with two wins at Randwick in the Group 1 $500,000 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and in the Group 1 $3m Doncaster Mile (1600m) and was also placed twice behind Winx when second in the Group 1 $1m George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill and third in the Group 1 $4m Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.
The final field for the 2018 Memsie Stakes will be released on Wednesday, August 29, 2018
