Cranbourne trainer Richard Laming will be chasing more rain affected tracks in the Spring for Jamaican Rain after the mare handled the heavy conditions to perfection to win the Listed $175,000 Oaks Hotels & Resorts Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast last Saturday.
Laming is hoping for a wet Spring Carnival which will give his wet track specialist Jamaican Rain an added advantage when she takes on feature Fillies and Mares races which could include the Group 1 $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on the first day of the 2018 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Jamaican Rain made it a one act affair when jockey Tegan Harrison extended the mare in the straight and she careered away to record a three and three quarter lengths win over her nearest rival Privlaka in the Glasshouse Handicap and Laming will give her short break before starting a Spring Carnival preparation.
“We’ll look to give her a short break in Queensland while the weather is good and get her ready for some mares races during spring, whether it’s Sydney or Melbourne, we’ll just try to find the weather,” Laming said on RSN.
“She’s only had three runs this prep so she doesn’t need long off. It’ll just be a freshen-up, two weeks in the paddock and then back into light work.”
“When the tracks are rain affected she seems to really relish it. A lot of horses probably can’t quicken up as quick as she can on a heavy track.”
“It’s not going to be that easy to keep her on them (wet tracks), especially when you’re trying to tackle nicer races, but if we can do it, we will be.”
Jamaican Rain showed her liking for a wet track and made it a hat trick of wins following her win at Cranbourne on a heavy 10, her win at The Valley on a Soft 5 followed by her win in the Glasshouse Handicap on a heavy 8.
The lightly raced Jamaican Rain is now the winner of six of her eleven race starts with five of those wins coming on rain affected ground.
