The Group 1 racing action of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival continues at Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday with the South Australian Derby 2018, betting tips and updated odds on the clash found below.
There are a full 16 runners set to face off in Saturday’s Group 1 $600,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) including four for dual defending trainer Darren Weir.
Weir has prepared the past two South Australian Derby winners with Howard Be Thy Name (2016) and Volatile Mix (2017) and his contingent this season is headed by the $3.90 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au Leicester.
Leicester is after the Chairman’s Stakes – SA Derby double most recently completed by Weir’s 2016 champ Howard Be Thy Name and is tipped to continue his winning ways.
The dangers looking at the latest South Australian Derby odds include Chairman’s runner-up High ‘N’ Dry ($6) with another wide alley to overcome, Chris Waller’s multiple Group 1 placegetter Tangled ($6) and the Roger James-trained Kiwi raider High Sherrif ($9) who looks like he will relish the step-up in distance down under.
Earlier we published a comprehensive SA Derby 2018 Form Guide & Betting Preview, our below tips based on the facts and stats uncovered there.
1st
#1 Runaway ($13)
Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained son of Manhattan Rain comes into the race after back-to-back staying wins, the latest by one and a half-lengths over 2800m in Flemington’s VRC St. Leger. Comes back to 2500m and is proven at distance, unlike the bulk of the field going up in distance. Presents fit, gets a run from barrier 14 (into 11) and looks overs despite this being his first foray into Group 1 company. Always respect an in-form Waterhouse three-year-old.
2nd
#2 Money Maher ($20)
Could be huge value in this year’s SA Derby markets and think there’s a case to be made for the WA raider Money Maher, especially at this price. Consistent Al Maher colt comes off a fourth in the WATC Derby (2400m) back home and has been up to the distance now. Heads interstate for the first time, but is well-tried with 16 starts now and is going too good to ignore.
3rd
#3 Leicester ($3.90)
Deserving favourite after his lead-up Chairman’s Stakes win. From the right stable, Weir chasing a hat-trick in the Derby. Has the experience at the track now and jumps favourite, the top fancies having won seven of the past 12 editions. Strong winning strike rate and looks to still have upside.
