It is a wide open affair in 2017 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes betting this weekend on the race offering a ballot exemption to the winner into Saturday week’s Caulfield Cup field.
A key non-Group 1 race support act on the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day program, this season’s Group 2 $400,000 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) is set to run as Race 4 at 2:05pm (AEDT).
Eleven stayers are in the mix for the mile and a half handicap and the Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes winner could be seen backing-up on October 21 earning a spot in the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Cup (2400m).
Of the 11 acceptors, two are international raiders nominated for upcoming spring majors.
Hugo Palmer has his British galloper Wall Of Fire in the mix, while the Charlie Appleby-trained Kidmenever runs first-up in the Herbert Power Stakes field.
Canford Cliffs stallion Wall Of Fire carries the 58kg top weight on Saturday with Mark Zahra in the saddle of the last start Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2716m) runner-up.
Palmer has the galloper nominated for the Caulfield Cup, Wall Of Fire currently sitting equal 21st on the order of entry with 53kg so is not guaranteed a start in the capacity 18-runner field.
Kidmenever is even further down the Caulfield Cup ballot in 33rd spot after 36 second acceptances were taken on Tuesday.
Glyn Schofield rides the Baltic King stallion on the weekend, Kidmenever a $6 shot for the win just shorter than Wall Of Fire paying $7.50 in the latest Herbert Power Stakes odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au.
Current narrow favourite in Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes betting is Aloft who has eased out from $3.70 to $4.20.
The in-form Galileo stallion is one of three Lloyd Williams-owned, Robert Hickmott-trained stayers in the race and jumps from barrier 10.
Twenty-sixth on the Caulfield Cup ballot, Aloft is out to improve on a lead-up third behind stablemate and reigning Melbourne Cup winner Almandin in the Listed JRA Trophy (2500m) from September 16.
Team Williams also saddle-up $21 roughie Gallante who comes off a dead last (15th) at the track behind Harlem in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and Foundry.
Foundry is equal $5.50 second favourite in Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes betting after the veteran’s last start win in Sydney’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).
Foundry carried just 50.5kg to victory in The Metropolitan over the same distance he is over this weekend, but goes up to 56kg on Saturday.
The other $5.50 fancy who is also the early Herbert Power Stakes market mover is Gallic Chieftain for Darren Weir, the five-year-old tipped to improve on a lead-up sixth behind Jon Snow in Moonee Valley’s Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m).
Gallic Chieftain will enjoy the step-up in distance this weekend having won his only other 2400m assignment to date in Rosehill’s Listed Winter Cup (2400m) back in July.
