The race is on for stayers heading towards Saturday week’s Caulfield Cup 2017 field with second acceptances leaving just 36 hopefuls including seven international raiders.

The first leg of Melbourne’s Spring Cups double, the $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) steals the show on October 21 with the best out of the race targeting the Group 1 $6 million Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) next-up over the two miles at Flemington on November 7.

Racing Victoria took 55 Melbourne Cup 2017 First Acceptances on Tuesday, while the Caulfield Cup Second Acceptances are down from 58 at the same stage last spring.

There is one extra international raider still in Caulfield Cup contention than 2016 however and the best fancied of the raiders in the latest all-in markets at [ladbroks] is Francis Of Assisi ($21).

The Charlie Appleby-trained veteran is well known to the Aussie punters having taken out both the Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m) and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) in Victoria last year, but missing out on a spot in the Melbourne Cup field.

Francis Of Assisi features in both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup latest round of acceptances, while the stable also has Kidmenever fighting for a spot in both features.

The other key international Caulfield Cup entries are last start Prix Kergorlay winner Marmelo for Hughie Morrison and the Aidan O’Brien-trained in-form stallion Johannes Vermeer from Ireland.

Current favourite in Caulfield Cup betting after winning the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on October 1 is the Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained Kiwi mare Bonneval ($4.60).

The Makfi four-year-old is out to extend her winning streak to seven straight this weekend at Caulfield lining-up in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

She is proven over the Caulfield Cup distance taking out the NZ Oaks – ATC Oaks double as a three-year-old filly last season and is currently allocated 52.5kg in the Caulfield Cup weights.

Co-trainer Baker won the Caulfield Cup two years ago with Mongolian Khan (2015) who improved on a lead-up third in the Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes, while Jameka (2016) won the race last year for the four-year-old mares.

Baker & Forsman also have ATC Derby winner Jon Snow and Lizzie L’Amour entered for both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in 2017.

The other gun four-year-old mare in Caulfield Cup contention is the Darren Weir-trained Amelie’s Star who won last weekend’s Group 1 The Bart Cummings (2500m) earning her a Melbourne Cup ballot exemption.

Weir has six Caulfield Cup horses still vying for a spot in the capacity 18-starter field, but Amelie’s Star is not yet guaranteed a run sitting 23rd on the ballot.

The stable’s runners high enough up the current Caulfield Cup ballot order are Humidor out to atone for his third to Winx in the Turnbull Stakes, Japanese raider Admire Deus and last start The Metropolitan runner-up Big Duke who is right on the cusp in 18th spot.

Penalised a half-kilo putting his Caulfield Cup weight up to 51.5kg, the Lindsay Park-trained Harlem is another key acceptor.

He won the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) earning a ballot free ride into the Caulfield Cup field before his fifth in The Bart Cummings at Flemington.

The other standout entry is Hartnell who will race in either the Caulfield Cup or take on Winx again in the Cox Plate depending on his run in this weekend’s Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes.

See below for the full Caulfield Cup 2017 second acceptances, the final field and barriers out next Tuesday (October 17) with the updated odds online now at Ladbrokes.com.au.
