Booker Can Handle 2017 Thousand Guineas Mile

Jockey Dwayne Dunn is confident his mount in the Thousand Guineas 2017 field on Saturday Booker can run out a strong mile after her lead-up Prelude win.

The Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m), which Dunn won two years ago on the Lindsay Park-trained Stay With Me (2015), features its smallest line-up in over three decades with just eight hopeful fillies taking to the track on Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day.

Dunn retains the ride on the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained daughter of Written Tycoon who occupies the third line of Thousand Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $6.

The Thousand Guineas odds are led by last start Sydney Flight Stakes winner Alizee ($2.15) out to do the double achieved by Global Glamour (2016) 12 months ago.

There has also been early money for Shoals ($5 into $4.60) for Anthony Freedman.

Last time out in the key lead-up into the Group 1 mile feature, Booker had a quarter-length to spare on the line over the second-placed Shoals for her Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) win.

Her effort that day was an improved effort on the close third when only a length off Catchy in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight.

Catchy ran third in the Thousand Guineas Prelude, but will be out to make history against the colts and geldings this Saturday as the sole filly in the capacity Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) field.

There have been some post-Prelude doubters suggesting that Booker may struggle over a further 200m stepping-up in distance for the Thousand Guineas.

Dunn though remains convinced the 1600m can suit and she can give the James Cummings-trained Alizee, already proven at the metres thanks to the Group 1 Flight Stakes success on Epsom Handicap Day, a run for her money.

“It was a great win the other day, she dominated. It’s another small field and barriers don’t play a great part,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“She gives me the feel that 1600 will suit her. Catchy going the other way makes our job a little bit easier.”

Dunn will chase the Guineas Group 1 double on the weekend also partnering favourite in the day’s marquee race Royal Symphony.

He won the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas last year on Divine Prophet and was also successful on $12 shot All Too Hard, a half-brother to super sprinter Black Caviar, back in 2012.

The Tony McEvoy-trained Royal Symphony has retained top spot in Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas betting this spring despite suffering his first loss when fourth in the Group 3 Prelude race last time out.

Dunn believes the Domesday colt, who has won a previous mile race at Flemington, will be back to winning form on the weekend despite the less-than-favourable barrier nine draw.

“It looks like those drawn in barriers one and two [pacesetters Showtime and Perast] will push up and might be the leaders, so we might be able to get over a bit,” he explained.

“He’s been a little bit of an enigma and hasn’t shown that gate speed [but] he was quite sharp in a jump out.

“He hasn’t done too much wrong. He can match it with those [who beat him].

“The way the day progressed then on pacers seemed to dominate. You have to believe in what you see and we know what we have got at home.”
