A promising field of two-year-olds hoping to make the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes field Saturday week take to the Rosehill Gardens track this weekend in The Schweppervescence 2017.
Kicking off the Rosehill Gardens race card at 12:20pm (AEDT) on Saturday, this season’s $150,000 Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) has attracted a full field of thirteen juveniles plus an emergency runner.
The race serves as a final lead-up into the $1 million Group 1 Inglis’ Sires (1400m) over the same distance at Royal Randwick on April 1, but no winner of that race has come out of Saturday’s event in three decades.
Formerly registered as the TL Baillieu Handicap, The Schweppervescence betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for this autumn currently feature four single-figure hopefuls.
Heading The Schweppervescence odds at $4.20 is the widely-drawn Astoria out in barrier fourteen.
James Doyle rides the Godolphin-raced Medaglia D’Oro colt who heads to the races for just the second time.
On debut the John O’Shea-trained galloper won over 1100m at Warwick Farm on March 8 on a Heavy (8) track by three and a half-lengths.
With Sydney racing set to take place on another Heavy-rated course at Rosehill this weekend, the bookies are tipping Astoria as the one to beat having impressed on similar ground first-up.
Occupying the second line of The Schweppervescence betting at $6.50 is Muraahib in gate three with Damien Oliver jumping aboard the Lindsay Park-trained youngster for the first time.
A winner of his first two starts, the Reset colt was last seen running a credible sixth behind stablemate Catchy in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in late February.
Saturday is Muraahib’s first run in Sydney and if he handles the right-handed way, will appreciate the drop back in class on the weekend.
Another two-year-old drawn in double-digits that has winning claims is Villa Carlotta ($7), Hugh Bowman riding the James Cummings-trained Street Cry filly.
She won over 1000m on Soft going for her mid-February debut and was last seen running third behind Frolic and She Will Reign in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on a Heavy (9) Randwick track on March 4.
The Reisling Stakes form was franked last weekend when She Will Reign turned the tables on Frolic, the two fillies running one-two in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).
That bodes well for Villa Carlotta this weekend as she prepares to step-up in distance and take on the colts and geldings.
Rounding out the single figure fancies at $9.50 is the consistent Gerald Ryan-trained Foxwedge gelding Albumin who comes off a Rosehill win from February 22.
