The two-year-old fillies face off for a Golden Slipper Stakes ballot exemption at Randwick on Saturday in the Sweet Embrace Stakes 2017, betting tips and updated odds on the Chipping Norton Stakes Day race found below.
All 12 original final acceptors for Randwick Race 3 at 2:00pm (AEDT) are still in the mix for this season’s $200,000 Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) – three of which are battling for favouritism.
The latest Sweet Embrace Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Exceeds ($4.60) on top despite the outside alley, followed closely by the undefeated Teaspoon ($4.80) and unraced Songlike ($5).
It really is a very open race, as are all two-year-old events, and the James Cummings-trained Snitzel filly Exceeds comes off a nice second behind the boys.
After a Randwick win over Eden Rock second-up at Royal Randwick, she returned to the track and crossed second to subsequent Group 2 Silver Slipper runner-up Veranillo on February 4.
That formline is hard to go past and she only needs to handle barrier 12 on the weekend to post her second career win.
Teaspoon will have a better go of it from a mid-field barrier five draw with Hugh Bowman – also riding Winx in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) – in the saddle of the Michael Freedman-trained daughter of Snitzel.
She is two-from-two including the first-up Rosehill victory on January 28 in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) with Bowman aboard.
The bookies are also taking no chances on Your Song filly Songlike prepared by Bjorn Baker, despite her yet to line-up on race day, based on her smart two length Rosehill trial win from mid-February.
So will the top three in the markets be the first three past the post in the Sweet Embrace Stakes 2017 results, or is there value tipping an upset from the likes of Victorian raider Arctic Angel ($7) who ran third in the Blue Diamond Prelude behind Catchy at Caulfield last start or even the returning John Thompson-trained Greater Good ($12)?
She is yet to have a Sydney start, but tipping the Melbourne form to stack up this weekend with this Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Hard Spun filly to improve second-up. She ran fourth on debut in a Group 3 on Melbourne Cup Day before a Listed win from a wide barrier (12 of 13) at Sandown. First-up at Caulfield was third only 1.35 lengths off this weekend’s 2017 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes favourite Catchy in the Prelude. That’s hard to knock.
Unbeaten and doing everything right ahead of a third career start here from an ideal barrier with Bowman of Winx fame in the saddle. Set weights works to her advantage and the Group 3 Widden Stakes win was strong enough over 1100m to suggest she’ll be just as solid at 1200m.
Blowout chance drawn the rails is the John Thompson-trained One More Honey. A Randwick winner on debut on Boxing Day and the lead-up fifth in the Widden Stakes was good. She’ll be fitter for the run, was defeated under two lengths that day from the same gate she has on the weekend and can close the gap with Jay Ford in the saddle again.
