Teaspoon Tops Sweet Embrace Stakes 2017 Field

Michael Freedman’s Widden Stakes winner Teaspoon is one of the 12 two-year-old fillies facing off for the Golden Slipper Stakes ballot exemption in Saturday’s 2017 Sweet Embrace Stakes field at Royal Randwick.

Due to run as Chipping Norton Stakes Day Race 3 at 2:00pm (AEDT), this season’s $200,000 Group 2 Vale Edgar Britt Oam Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) has attracted a dozen acceptors including the undefeated Teaspoon.

Drawn ideally in barrier five, the daughter of Snitzel is locally trained by Freedman and comes off a Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) win at Rosehill.

That followed a successful debut last November and on Saturday she has Hugh Bowman in the saddle again, Bowman also riding superstar mare Winx in the Chipping Norton Stakes 2017.

The Sweet Embrace Stakes winner, as well as the Skyline Stakes winner later on the card, earn a ballot free ride into the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on March 18.

Currently Teaspoon is at $51 in futures Golden Slipper odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, a price set to firm if she remains undefeated with a Group 2 win on Saturday.

The only other last start winner in the Sweet Embrace Stakes field this autumn is the David Payne-trained Delago Thunder who saluted at Kembla Grange on January 28 and is now up notably in class.

Higher-up the ratings are the widely-drawn duo of Arctic Angel and Exceeds in barriers 10 and 12 respectively.

Victorian visitor Arctic Angel is a two-year-old daughter of Hard Spun who has had three runs all in Melbourne to date leading up to her Sydney debut.

She is a Listed winner from November at Sandown-Hillside and ran a smart first-up third behind Saturday’s 2017 Blue Diamond Stakes betting favourite Catchy in the Group 2 Prelude for that Caulfield Group 1 on February 11.

Exceeds also comes off some nice autumn form including the James Cummings-trained Snitzel filly’s Randwick win in late January.

She was last seen placing second to Veranillo back at the track on February 4 beaten one and a half lengths in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) against the colts and geldings.

Drawn the opposite end of the field in barrier one is the John Thompson-trained One More Honey who is out to improve on her fifth when under two lengths beaten by Teaspoon in the Widden Stakes.

The Godolphin stable are represented by Street Cry filly Savatiano who raced at Randwick on February 15 running second over 1200m, while the unraced Bjorn Baker-trained Songlike could be in for a big debut on the back of a nice trial win at Rosehill.
