Chris Waller’s veteran galloper Amovatio is allocated top weight of the 2016 Summer Cup contender for the Boxing Day feature at Royal Randwick in Sydney on Monday.
Due to run as Randwick Race 6 at 4:20pm (AEDT), this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) attracted a final field of just eight end-of-year staying types.
Carrying 58kg from barrier six with the in-form Brenton Avdulla in the saddle is Al Maher six-year-old Amovatio chasing his first win since the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) back in April.
He’s been in consistent form since including a Festival Stakes fourth to Sweet Redemption two back beaten under a length and is out to improve on a last start sixth to Sense Of Occasion in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 17.
In the Villiers Stakes Amovatio carried the same weight (58kg) and was beaten under three lengths, but how he goes over the Summer Cup distance is the query as he gets out over further than a mile for the first time.
Sydney’s premier trainer Waller has also accepted for Beyond Thankful into the Summer Cup field.
Glyn Schofield rides the Whipper seven-year-old from gate four on 54.5kg, a nice drop back from the 57.5kg Beyond Thankful had on his back when sixth behind Destiny’s Kiss at Randwick last Saturday in the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m).
Christmas Cup winner in the wet, Destiny’s Kiss is also accepted for the rematch in next week’s Summer Cup over 400m shorter.
Prepared by Joe Pride, the Power Of Destiny eight-year-old has his 62nd career run in the Group 3 and looks well weighted on 56kg.
That’s half-a-kilo less than his Christmas Cup winning weight and he also has plenty of form over 2000m with three wins and four thirds from 14 starts at the shorter distance.
The other last start winner in the mix is the John O’Shea-trained Godolphin galloper Malice.
James Doyle rides the son of Teofilo from barrier two on Monday, six-year-old Malice having put a quarter-length on Beyond Thankful for his Listed ATC Cup (2000m) win at Rosehill on December 3.
The other exciting Summer Cup horses this season include Gerald Ryan’s Festival Stakes third placegetter Red Excitement who won a Rosehill trial on December 20 to bring him on for the Boxing Day run and the Peter Robl-trained Centre Pivot coming off a fourth in the Villiers Stakes.
