Tonight Launceston Racecourse hosts the 2016 Tasmanian Stakes, betting tips and the updated odds for the summer black-type found below.
Running as Launceston Race 6 at 9:30pm (local), this year’s $100,000 Listed Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) has a dozen starters with the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au firmly led by Admiral.
Drawn the inside alley with Luke Currie to ride, Barry Campbell’s ultra-consistent Mossman five-year-old is odds-on in the latest Tasmanian Stakes betting markets at $1.80 for the win.
He comes off a Listed Conquering Stakes (1400m) win at the track from December 7, his ninth victory from 13 Launceston starts, and chases back-to-back Tasmanian Stakes victories after taking out the weight-for-age feature 12 months ago.
The only other single-figure fancies in the Tasmanian Stakes odds at $6 each for the upset are Scott Brunton’s Conquering Stakes runner-up Hellova Street and the Adam Trinder-trained third placegetter in the same lead-up race Jerilderie Letter drawn in barriers six and 12 respectively.
So does Admiral have the win in the bag as his short-price suggests or is there value tipping a longer-priced hope to take out this season’s Tasmanian Stakes?
He is super short in betting, but Admiral is impossible to tip against. He’s a Launceston specialist (13-9-1-1) and is proven over the mile with three wins from five starts at the 1600m including his 1.5 length win in this race last year. Genuine weight-for-age horse, Group 1 performed interstate and gets things his way from barrier one. Took out the Conquering WFA Stakes for the second year straight last start and can continue the winning form here with Currie retaining the ride.
Despite the outside alley think this Bushranger four-year-old, who has competitive form in Melbourne over the spring on the record, can finish right in the money again after his Conquering Stakes third last time out. Was beaten 1.5 lengths second-up and will only improve getting out over the extra distance having won up to 2200m. Will eat up the metres, Anthony Darmanin continues associations and after the luckless run last time out is the one with the most upside.
Of the double-figure hopes this Stuart Gandy-trained Wordsmith mare looks the value for a place. She ran fourth in the Conquering beaten under two lengths and will be hitting her peak third-up. From two runs at a mile she boasts a second and a third so the distance is a non-issue. Was impressive in February when runner-up in the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) and gets the run of the race from gate two.
Now is the ideal time to get in on the summer racing and betting action at Ladbrokes.com.au – home of Odds Boost (T&Cs apply).
