Flying Artie Posts Dominant Win in Coolmore Stud Stakes

Flying Artie was all but forgotten in Coolmore Stud Stakes betting markets as punters focused their attention on stable mare Extreme Choice, Godolphin colt Astern and the Team Hawkes-trained Star Turn.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Hugh Bowman tucked the Artie Schiller colt away behind the likes of Star Turn and Saracino in the early stages of the Coolmore Stud Stakes and allowed plenty of time before producing his runner.

Finding a gap between Star Turn and Astern with 300m to run, Flying Artie produced a career-best turn of foot to savage the line for a maiden win at the highest level.

Bowman picked up the ride on Flying Artie after regular hoop Damien Oliver was suspended two weeks ago, and was thrilled to deliver trainer Mick Price and connections the Coolmore Stud Stakes win.

“He’s a super horse,” Bowman said after crossing the line.

“I will give a little mention to Damien Oliver because this is his horse and through similar circumstances, he was here winning the Derby on Preferment a few years ago so racing can have its up and downs.

“To have the opportunity to ride him, beautiful horse and he’s only going to improve as he gets older.

“He’s the real deal physically but I think mentally, he appreciated just being snugged in behind him and being exposed late.

“It was a dominant win and it spells very exciting things for a bright future, because that was a very strong race.”

Price was thrilled with Flying Artie’s performance to win the Coolmore Stud Stakes and was quick to lay all the praise on the quality of the horse, as well as Bowman’s ten-out-of-ten ride.

“He’s won the right Group 1, hasn’t he,” Price said.

“It was a funny race because he drew barrier 1 and I was a bit nervous about it and when he speared left by himself there, I thought well that’s what I thought would happen.

“Somehow Hughie Bowman makes a brilliant Hughie Bowman decision to get himself into the fat part of the race because I did think the outside held a lot of the pressure there.

“So to get into the middle of them, it’s just Hughie Bowman.

“A lesser horse couldn’t have done it and I’m just wrapped that finally Flying Artie has nailed a good Group 1, probably the Group 1 for three-year-old colts.”

Flying Artie was placed in each of the Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) in autumn, and resumed this time for success in the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) on October 12th.
