The second of the ‘Big 3’ Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors plays out at the notoriously tight Moonee Valley circuit this weekend with Winx defending her Cox Plate crown and we’ve got all the best Cox Plate Day 2016 tips below.
With seven Group races scattered across the 10 event line-up there’s something for everyone at the Valley this Saturday, October 22, including the meeting’s marquee attraction.
The spectators and punters are set to turn out in droves to see the Chris Waller-trained Winx attempt another demolition job in the $3 million Group 2 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m), but could she be way unders as an odds-on favourite?
Other Cox Plate Day highlights include an open field led by The United States facing off the in the Crystal Mile (Race 7), the stayers doing battle in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Race 8) including Sydney Cup champ Gallante and the Derby types staking their claims in the Moonee Valley Vase (Race 10).

Inglis Banner field features a bumper 14 two-year-olds, all bar three on debut. The Tony McEvoy-trained Miss Wahoo ran third in the Listed Debutant Stakes (1000m) on October 8 and will strip fitter getting another gun run from barrier four. Feng Chu is also drawn a treat here (2) on the back of a narrow fourth in the same race and they’ll prove hard to beat from the barriers with the race experience at blowout odds.
The ultra-consistent David Jolly-trained Tarco is the value in this and has Soft track experience too so if there’s rain he’s still okay. Won over 1000m in easy company at Murray Bridge last start, but think dropping in weight from the gate (4) he’s a livewire. O’Malley will be closing fast late and is the danger, while Felines for Kris Lees is the class runner coming off a Group 3 Sydney win. She handles the wet, but going up from 54kg to 60kg top weight is the question.
Big field of three-year-old fillies running in this and think the value is Grenta, drawn to get a run from gate five with J. Mac aboard. Chris Waller’s Snitzel filly ran second at Caulfield last time out, before which she was only beaten 1.1 lengths for fifth in the Group 3 Champagne race for fillies at this track. Sweet Sherry the favourite and danger on the back of the Atlantic Jewel third here on September 3, has been freshened-up and loves the track.
