Due to jump at 12:50pm (AEST) as Rosehill Race 2, there are just five runners lining up in the $125,000 Group 3 2016 Queen’s Cup (2400m) this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
Registered as the Colin Stephen Quality, betting markets for the mile and a half showdown at Ladbrokes.com.au are wide open with four of the runners under $10 for the win.
Current $2.40 favourite and firming is Allergic, the John O’Shea-trained son of Street Cry to be ridden by James McDonald on the back of a third to McCreery at the track in the Group 3 Kingston Town Classic (2000m) two weeks back.
The other major player in Colin Stephen Quality betting is Algeria ($2.80) who is also raced by Godolphin, the Medaglia D’Oro mare third-up and looking to break a notable winning drought going back to July of last year.
So will the two O’Shea-trained runners battle it out for the win and the ballot exemption for next month’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m), or is there value tipping the likes of Chris Waller’s Newcastle Cup placegetter last time out Junoob ($4.20) or the flying Joe Cleary-trained Chaquinta ($9.50) coming off three Sydney wins on the trot?
1st
#3 Algeria ($2.80)
The longer priced of the two O’Shea runners, this mare may have crossed ninth and fifth first and second-up respectively, but she was only three and a half lengths off the winners of the Winter Challenge and Wyong Cup. Third-up can improve getting up over 2400m. She might only have winning form up to 1500m, but her close second to Libran in Randwick’s Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) in April shows she’s got genuine staying potential.
2nd
#1 Junoob ($4.20)
Waller’s evergreen nine-year-old is a veteran of 54 starts and is still racing consistently with two thirds from three runs this campaign. The import hasn’t won since the 2015 Ballarat Cup nearly a year ago, but the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) third in the winter and last start third in the Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2200m) have him right in this. Gives the weight away (59kg), but is used to doing so and is priced accordingly.
3rd
#2 Allergic ($2.40)
The other O’Shea runner is weighted 58kg and rises from 56.5kg from the weight he carried for the Kingston Town third last time out. Has good Rosehill form (6-2-1-1) and has won up to 2060m. This trip is still a query, but if he improves and handles the weight he’s far from a beaten thing.
