Winx & Waller Rule 2016 Chelmsford Stakes Field

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller and Australia’s champion racehorse Winx dominate the Chelmsford Stakes 2016 field at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday in Sydney.

Superstar mare Winx shoots for her eleventh consecutive victory on the weekend and has scared off all but seven rivals in the $250,000 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) field.

Due to run as Randwick Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEST), the weight-for-age Chelmsford Stakes features six Waller-trained runners led by his five-year-old daughter of Street Cry.

Winx is a six-time Group 1 winner but is being kept to easier early spring assignments as Waller hopes to extend her brilliance to include not only a title defence in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 22 but also a run in the new Group 1 Emirates Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on November 5.

The $6.8 million earning mare won first-up by three and a half lengths cruising home with Hugh Bowman in the saddle for the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).

Bowman retains the ride this weekend with Winx drawn in the outside barrier (eight) where she is set to start the very short-priced odds-on favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au once again.

Waller is set to hoping to crush the Chelmsford Stakes results this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival also accepting for a host of other runners including the returning Preferment.

A five-year-old Zabeel stallion, Preferment hasn’t raced since his 12th to Lucia Valentina in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

Before that he enjoyed back-to-back Group 1 wins with success in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) and Rosehill’s Group 1 The BMW (2400m).

He has trilled twice in the lead-up to his return, but he is yet to win first-up from four previous runs and is also yet to win over less than 2000m.

Other notable stayers for the Waller stable taking on Winx include Grand Marshal and Who Shot Thebarman who ran the Sydney Cup quinella back in 2015.

Grand Marshal also ran third in this year’s Sydney Cup over the two miles after his third to Preferment in The BMW and returned with a seventh of seven runners in the Warwick Stakes.

Who Shot Thebarman is another dour stayer set to improve the more metres he runs over this campaign, the now eight-year-old coming off a sixth in the Warwick Stakes.

He is perhaps best known for his third to Protectionist in the 2014 Melbourne Cup and ran second in this year’s The BMW and fourth in the Sydney Cup in April.

Waller’s line-up is completed by Storm The Stars and Spirit Jim.

Jumping from barrier two with James McDonald aboard is perhaps Winx’s biggest “danger”, the John O’Shea-trained Hartnell.

The Godolphin-raced import is second-up after his Warwick Stakes second, the Authrozied six-year-old chasing his first win since the 2015 The BMW in Sydney.

Finally the Chelmsford Stakes field is completed by the James Cummings-trained Prized Icon.

The three-year-old carries just 50.5kg at weight-for-age with Kathy O’Hara booked for the lightweight ride on the weekend.

Winner of the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) back in mid-April, the More Than Ready colt comes off a fourth to Divine Prophet against his own age in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) a fortnight back.
