Winx wins 2016 Doncaster Mile in a canter
Super star Winx made it nine wins on the trot when she proved too strong for her rivals in winning the Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) on day one of ‘The Championships’ at Randwick today.

Winning rider Hugh Bowman settled Winx back in the second half of the field and gave her a quiet run with her 56.5kg before he started to move forward at the 800m.
Bowman was stuck in the middle of the ruck rounding the home turn but forced his way clear at the 300m giving Winx ($1.80 favourite) a clear run to the run.
Once Bowman had her in the clear, the Cox Plate winner accelerate as she normally does and went on to beat Happy Clapper ($13) by two lengths with Melbourne mare Azkadellia ($9) a quarter of a length away in third spot.
Today’s win was Winx’s sixth Group 1 win, giving her the two Randwick Feature Mile races after claiming victory in the 2015 Group 1 $1m The Star 150th Epsom (1600m) before she went on to win the Group 1 $3m Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley during the 2015 Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Winning trainer Chris Waller was brought to tears with Winx’s sensational win and had no trouble putting her in the champion category.
“I will call a champion while I can speak,” Waller said.
“It is pretty unbelievable. She must have an amazing will to win.”
Waller will have to monitor Winx’s recovery from today’s win during the week to decide if he is going to back her up at Randwick next Saturday in the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
“I will see how much today takes out of her,” Waller said.
“I have never asked her to recover quickly. I usually leave her alone for three or four days. I have never had to see.”
