Talented French import Pornichet has easily justified his clear favouritism in Queensland this afternoon; completing a strong all-round performance to take out the featured Toowoomba Cup (2150m) at a jog, by a length.
Jumping from the gates well, Tim Bell immediately settled Pornichet in prime position on the heels of early leader Volkhere who did not set much of a fast tempo away from the barriers and over the back straight.
Steadily picked up the pace with Volkhere rounding onto the final straight, Pornichet made two lengths on the corner and emerged comfortably in the clear of all his rivals; never looking troubled when returning to the winner’s circle ahead of Volkhere; notable Queenslander Hopfgarten boxing on for third.
Pornichet stamped his claims as one to watch upon arriving in the care of Gai Waterhouse partway through the Spring Carnival; running fourth in the Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) before posting a near two length win in the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m).
Requiring a few runs to find form this time, the Vespone entire placed ninth in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) and fifth in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) before posting another impressive win in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) on March 28th.
Managing to overcome the bogged Randwick track for a credible fifth in the featured Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) in his only other start prior to this afternoon’s 2015 Toowoomba Cup triumph, Pornichet is likely to progress to next weekend’s Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) should he be accepted into the race’s final field.
Trainer Robert Heathcote saddled the minor placings in Volkere and Hopfgarten in the 2015 Toowoomba Cup and revealed mid-week he would also like to back-up the third placegetter in next weekend’s Doomben Cup.
Pornichet was a deserving clear favourite in 2015 Toowoomba Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au but still offered good value for money $2.40 odds.
