Doomben Cup May Figure for Rudy

Doomben Cup May Figure for Rudy

Queensland raider Rudy produced a commendable effort for fourth in the featured Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) last week, and may progress to a tilt at the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9th, according to trainer Helen Page.

Jumping from the gates well in the Doncaster Mile, Rudy was immediately settled within the capacity and talented-rich field of 20 by young jockey Luke Tarrant, and while unlucky to be blocked for a run rounding onto the final straight, displayed a keen turn of foot to hit the line well and post arguably his most impressive racing result to date.

Revealing the son of Red Dazzler has returned to the paddock at spelling property Kolora Lodge, Page told AAP Managing owner Tom Clarke is interested in trying Rudy over a middle distance at the highest level, underlining the 2015 Doomben Cup as an ideal target.

“Tom and his wife Gilda are off for a holiday but he was keen to try Rudy over a middle distance in top company,” Page said.

“We feel Rudy is racing like he would like the 1800 to 2000 metre distance range.

“In a normal year we might have looked at the Group One Stradbroke which is usually run over 1400 metres at Eagle Farm.

“But this year it is 1350 around Doomben and that won’t suit him.”

Having initially outlined a plan to return Rudy to the paddock prior to a spring racing campaign, Page said she will not risk the well-being of her stable star should he not want to continue this time.

“But in the end we won’t take any risks with the horse,” Page added.

“If he looks ready to continue on with his campaign we will go ahead. But if he is showing any signs of being ready for a spell that is where he is going.

“He is a much stronger horse now.”

Posting a commendable record of seven wins and five minor place finishes through his 22 start career so far, Rudy gained ballot-free entry to the Doncaster Mile when taking out the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at the conclusion of a strong summer campaign.

The Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast on April 25th with figure as Rudy’s first point of call should her return this time; progressing to the Doomben Cup a fortnight later.
