Winks Confident in Deep Field’s 2015 Lightning Stakes Chance

A small yet highly talented field of six sprinters will contest the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday, for which Deep Field is the $2.30 favourite.

Just edging out the world’s highest-rated sprinter Lankan Rupee ($2.45) in the odds, Deep Field will jump from barrier five with James Winks to ride.

Winks secured the ride on the Team Hawkes-trained horse after Dwayne Dunn was unable to have his eight meeting suspension cut by one day.

The jockey has already ridden in four Group One races during his career but appears most excited about the 2015 Lightning Stakes, even going as far as to compare Deep Field to Black Caviar herself.

“This is what you work hard for – to get on good horses like Deep Field,” Winks told TVN.

“From what he’s done he could be the next best thing since Black Caviar if he performs in the (Black Caviar) Lightning.

“I’ve worked hard in my career to get back to this point and now I have been given an opportunity to take it to the next level.

“Every time I’ve ridden for the Hawkes’ they have made me feel really comfortable.”

Deep Field won all five of his career starts last year but that doesn’t mean victory in the Black Caviar Lightning will be an easy task.

It will be the four-year-olds first Group One race after winning the Listed Tattersalls Club Lightning (1100m) and Group 2 Tab.com.au Stakes (1200m) during the spring.

Winks was not aboard Deep Field when he had his first official jump-out last Friday, in fact he was on rival horse London Lolly. That didn’t stop the jockey from watching on in awe as the horse disposed of his horse with 200m to go.

“I know how good my horse worked and Deep Field just dropped us at the furlong (sic 200 metres),” he said.

“He’s a high cruising horse and if he gives a good kick he’ll win the Lightning.”
