Exciting two-year-old filly Eloping has produced a particularly impressive run on day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick this afternoon, leading from start to finish to claim the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) by nearly two lengths.

Jumping well, the Choisir filly set a reasonably quick tempo over the back straight, leading Oakleigh Girl and Sultry Feeling round the bend and hitting the final straight in the clear.
Appearing to be reeled in by her closest competitors, Eloping found an extra gear and pulled clear with 200 metres to run, opening up a noticeable gap and finding the line in the clear of Ygritte and Shaumari.
Trainer Peter Morgan was delighted with Eloping’s performance in the Royal Randwick Stakes, having claimed her fourth win in only seven career starts.
“What a filly; she’s never had a day of soreness and she just keeps eating up and we take her home and bring her back and just a wonderful horse” Morgan said following the race.
“I should imagine she’ll get a break, but sometimes you give them a break and they don’t come back, so who knows.
“I think I’ve been saying that for the last five starts, but she does really well and the paddock suits her.”
Jockey Stephen Baster delivered a perfectly timed ride on Eloping in today’s major race for two-year-olds, but was quick to heap the praise on his talented partner.
“She’s amazed me; I’ve basically come in every time and said maybe she should have a break, but Pete said she just gets home and eats up and is just unbelievable, so she’s special” Baster said.
“I was worried about the 1200 metre mark; I knew she’d get a strong 1100 I just didn’t know about the 1200.
“When Froggy (Craig Newitt, Oakleigh Girl) took off a little bit early at the top of the straight I just had to wait a little bit and I was worried about her being inside, but she was good as gold and strong to the line to her credit.”
Initially aimed towards an appearance in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) next weekend, Eloping is likely to return to the spelling paddock following today’s impressive run, ahead of a busy 2014 spring preparation.
