One of the key races at Flemington’s Finals Day this Saturday will be the All Victorian Sprint Series Final 2013 which has attracted a final field of 13 hopefuls.
Set to run as Flemington Race 5 at 2:22pm (AEST) this year’s $120,000 Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final (1200m) features an intriguing mix of sprinters, the top-rated and weighted of which is the Stephen Brown-trained Sea Lord.
Drawn in gate five with 60kg and Stephen Baster to ride the Street Cry five-year-old is second-up for the season.
They resumed on June 15 at Moonee Valley when fourth to Dee Bee Nine in the Slickpix Handicap (1200m) carrying 58kg and even with their big weight are tipped to run well again here.
With Sydney trainer Peter Snowden opting not to accept for Skytrain in the All Victorian Sprint Final this weekend, Sea Lord is the only Group winner in the mix having won the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at the Valley back in January.
Snowden will still be represented in the race however by Chasse (barrier six), the Octagonal gelding racing for the first time since their disappointing 11th to Budriguez in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield back in February.
Following Sea Lord in the field and weights with 57kg is then the Peter Moody-trained Mr Make Believe (57kg).
Luke Nolen’s mount has a wide barrier 12 draw to overcome with the Commands six-year-old having finished dead last when carrying only 56kg in the Slickpix Handicap.
Slickpix Handicap winner Dee Bee Nine meanwhile backs up on Saturday, Will Clarken’s Red Ransom gelding on the 54kg minimum.
They did have only 51kg when ridden by apprentice hoop Jackie Beriman for that run, and although the same jockey is aboard on Saturday there’s no weight allowance for apprentice riders in the All Victorian Sprint Final.
The only other last start winner in the mix is then Ken Sweeney’s Riziz (56.5kg) in gate nine who put an easy three lengths on their closest rivals at Swan Hill to win the Golden Topaz (1200m) on June 7.
That run was just one after the Adelaide-trained four-year-old finished seventh beaten just two lengths by Platelet in May’s Group 1 The Goodwood.
Other notable acceptors then include Colin & Cindy Alderson’s The Goodwood sixth place-getter Perturbo, honest Craonbourne-based grey Dash For Viz and another South Australian galloper in Belfast Boy.
