Whittington Heads 2013 Canonbury Stakes Field

Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper 2013 fancy Whittington will take their next step towards the world’s richest juveniles’ race when they resume in the $100,000 Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

One of 10 two-year-old colts and geldings engaged in this year’s Canonbury Stakes, promising Tale Of The Cat colt Whittington races for the first time since their blistering three length victory in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick last October in a much awaited return.

Drawn on the rails with their Breeders Plate jockey Tommy Berry engaged again Whittington has had two winning Randwick trials leading up to this first-up run most recently by two lengths over 1050m on February 1.

Their good form so far has seen them enter the picture for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on April 6 and they are currently the $15 fourth pick in the futures Golden Slipper odds at the online bookies.

Another solid chance in the futures Golden Slipper betting markets engaged in the Canonbury this weekend is then the Grant Allard-trained Napayshini who is not currently nominated for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival classic.

Despite connections having to pay a hefty $150,000 late entry to get Ready’s Image colt Napayshini into the Slipper they are still at $26 in the markets having run a good second to All The Talk in the Warwick Farm Plate back in early December.

They return in the Canonbury and will jump from gate eight with apprentice hoop Sam Clipperton in the saddle reuniting with them.

Other Golden Slipper bound juveniles in the Canonbury Stakes field 2013 then include David Hayes’ Sebring colt Criterion who won here on debut during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the Anthony Cummings-trained Never Can Tell who also boasts a big three length Rosehill win to their name, and Dane Shadow colt Flak Jacket coming off a Kembla Grange win in the wet from February 2 all at around $51 in the latest markets – prices that will firm with an upset win on the weekend.
