Peter Moody’s star import Manighar has eased out slightly in their favouritism to win the 2012 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield this weekend, the Linamix six-year-old out for their fourth Group 1 victory.
Sincero is the only single-figure chance for the Underwood Stakes 2012 not to ease in their price
Earlier in the week Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes, The BMW triple winner Manighar opened at $2.25 to take out the first Group 1 race of the season in Melbourne – the $400,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).
They have since drifted out slightly to $2.30 but are still the red hot favourite in the Underwood Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au.
Prices on all the early fancies in fact have become more generous over the past 24 hours aside from Memsie Stakes winner Sincero who remains the firm $5.50 second favourite.
Southern Speed, who beat Manighar home last time out by a nose in the Makybe Diva Stakes, has drifted out from $6.50 to $7 while smart Kiwi raider Ocean Park, coming off an eye-catching Group 1 win back home in NZ, is also out from $7 to $8.
While the bookies and punters are still to be convinced, connections of reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed are confident her Makybe win over Manighar was no fluke and she has the talent to get home first again on Saturday.
There was much post-race talk over Manighar failing to get a clear run when he raced first-up in the Makybe, but Southern Speed’s co-trainer Leon Macdonald said the fact his mare did have a clear run heading into a strong head wind made her victory even more impressive.
“Manighar had cover in the Makybe Diva. Southern Speed was three wide running into that strong head wind all the way up the straight,” Macdonald said.
“I thought she’d got beaten and I wasn’t too happy.”
Other horses to drift in the Underwood Stakes odds include last year’s Caulfield Cup failure December Draw ($8.50 out to $9.50) and Doomben Cup winner Mawingo ($12 out to $13).
