While most of the attention this weekend will be focused on the Group racing in Sydney, there is still plenty of quality action in Melbourne and one of the most exciting races will be the Listed 2012 McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
The field features a number of promising colts and geldings who have been nominated for the Caulfield Guineas and race fans could possibly get an early insight in to who will star this spring.
Heading the market currently is Peter Moody-trained colt Liberty Rock ($4.00) who stands just ahead of Awesome Bro ($4.40) and Rusambo ($5.00).
Other horses in the market include black-type placegetter Dominant ($6.00) and the Patinack-owned Maury ($6.50).
Unsure who to back in this field of lightly-raced youngsters? Don’t worry! The Races.com.au form experts have been working hard to develop our very best selections.
The Winner
#5 Liberty Rock $4.00
In what should be a close contest, this Peter Moody-trained colt appears to be the standout pick.
Won impressively on debut at Kyneton in February and backed it up later that month to finish runner-up behind gun colt All Too Hard.
Throw in the Moody-Nolen combination factor as well as a handy barrier four draw and it is hard not to have this promising colt at the top of McKenzie Stakes selections.
The Placings
#6 Dominant $6.00 and #3 Maury $6.50
Despite being immature and very green, Dominant was able to finish second on debut at Listed level in April.
The bad manners have reportedly improved greatly which should allow him to further show his ability as a three-year-old.
Maury showed plenty of potential as a two-year-old for two wins from four starts and finished third in the same race Dominant made his debut.
