Permit On Track for Sydney Cup – 2012 Chairman’s Quality Results

In form British gelding Permit has continued his excellent Sydney Cup preparation with a win in the Group 2 $175,000  2012 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse today.

Permit wins the Chairman's Quality at Randwick

It is the second straight victory for the Chris Waller-trained five-year-old who showed a nice turn of foot to come down the outside at the top of the straight and over take eventual runner-up Older Than Time.

Rated as a top Sydney Cup contender, Permit has now won three of five starts in 2012 with his worst finish a third-placing.

Waller had plenty of praise for jockey Corey Brown who stayed patient with Permit who started from an unfavourable barrier (12).

“From an awkward barrier he had him in a really good position, a lot closer than I thought he would have been,” Waller said.

“I put a lot of pressure on my jockeys and I don’t think that helps in big races. They can often ride too much to instructions.

“To Corey’s credit, he backed himself, got him a lot closer than I thought he would’ve been and got a gem of a run.”

The British stayer came to Waller with little form on the board and Waller has opted to keep the formula simple and it has produced results.

“Just leave the horse to being a happy horse and that’s all we’ve done,” Waller said.

“Right from his first start, he’s looked very one paced but he’s always tried hard.

“We haven’t changed the formula, just taken him along quietly and it seems to work.”

Gai Waterhouse-trained horse Older Than Time ran well to finish second but was too one paced to match Permit’s turn of foot while Nextanix finished in third place.

The Sydney Cup will be run over 3200 metres on April 28 at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse.
