The third race at Victoria Derby Day today is the $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) for three-year-old fillies, scheduled to start at 12:35pm (AEDST).
The 2010 Wakeful Stakes field features 18 runners after the scratching of #17 Wave Dancer, giving first emergency Count Your Fingers a start.
There are a number of real chances in this fillies-feature at Flemington today, with the current favourite being Brazilian Pulse paying $4.60 at Luxbet.
The Michael Moroney-trained Brazilian Pulse was outstanding in their second place to Sistine Angel in the Edward Manifold here two starts back and also caught our eye with a strong third on a Slow track in the Thousand Guineas last start.
So we are sticking with the favourite and backing Brazilian Pulse to win the Wakeful today.
With so many classy fillies lining up in the race and track conditions still not guaranteed, value picks to add into your multiples are Shamrocker, Divorces and Dizlago.
Shamrocker is a bit of an unknown in the wet, but Danny O’Brien’s classy filly was third in the Edward Manifold and can Place again today.
Divorces has had two unlucky runs of late, but Snowden’s runner can improve if she finds a good spot to settle and pull out a winning run as she did in the Thousand Guineas Prelude three back.
Dizlago is a prime Each Way pick, Lee Freedman’s well-bred Encosta De Lago filly coming off a superb win on heavy ground at Caulfield.
