VRC Champions Stakes betting is open on the $3 million weight-for-age feature – formerly known as the Mackinnon Stakes – as soon as the nominations on the Flemington showdown are out.
Champions Stakes bet types include Win, Place, Each Way and Exotic selections like the Mackinnon Stakes Trifecta.
Our exclusive 2023 Champions Stakes tips on the weight-for-age horses to back and sack in the lucrative Melbourne Cup Carnival feature will be published below closer to the release of the Champions Stakes field 2023.
A stellar edition of the VRC Champions Stakes and have the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained international West Wind Blows on top. A former stablemate to this year’s Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup champion Without A Fight, this UK-based Teofilo five-year-old is third-up down under for the spring and well acclimatised now. He has an excellent record over the distance (7:3-2-2) and comes off back-to-back Group 1 seconds behind some very good horses in Australia. Fresh was second to last year’s Melbourne Cup champ Gold Trip in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at this track and distance. Rose to 2400m and was narrowly beaten by Without A Fight in the Caulfield Cup. That form was franked on Tuesday with Without A Fight blasting his rivals away with a stellar Melbourne Cup win by over two lengths. Think West Wind Blows can do the same back to 2000m and fit now. Jamie Spencer stays on, barrier two, just needs to prove he is a genuine WFA horse with the 59kg.
The VRC Champions Stakes 2023 betting markets on the full Champions Stakes field will be published below closer to Melbourne Cup week 2023.
In the meantime, check out our Champions Stakes Tips page for more guides to your Champions Stakes betting.
The favourites in Mackinnon Stakes / Champions Stakes betting only have a fair recent record in the Flemington weight-for-age race.
From 2006 – 2023 just three favourites have saluted for the punters with So You Think (2010), Arcadia Queen (2020) and Zaaki (2021).
Zaaki returned and won the Mackinnon in 2022 at odds of $8 with Anamoe running fourth as the beaten favourite at $2.35.
Between So You Think and Arcadia Queen six of the subsequent Emirates / Mackinnon Stakes winners also jumped at single figures: Magic Wand ($4.80 in 2019), Glass Harmonium ($7 in 2011), Alcopop ($6 in 2012), Happy Trails ($7 in 2014), Galio Chop ($8 in 2015), and Tosen Stardom ($6.50 in 2017).
There was an upset win by Awesome Rock ($19 in 2016) in the new-look race and a blowout in 2018 when Trap For Fools won at Mackinnon Stakes odds of $26.
A top Champions Stakes betting tip then looking at that Champions Stakes form guide fact is to back the single-figures in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Win, but lay the favourite.
All the usual betting options are open on the VRC Champions Stakes including backing the Champions Stakes winner (Win), backing the Champions Stakes place-getters (Place) and backing the Champions Stakes exotic bets like the first three over the line in the Champions Stakes Trifecta in correct order.
The Champions Stakes Quinella, Champions Stakes Exacta and Champions Stakes Trifecta are obviously hard results to predict but they pay-out generously if successful.
A good Champions Stakes tip to help with exotic bets is to Box your exotics at Ladbrokes.com.au to cover all Champions Stakes results.
