Each October at Caulfield Racecourse another top stayer adds its name to the glowing list of famous Caulfield Cup winners when the Group 1 handicap staying showdown runs as part of the wider Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
A key lead-up to the iconic Melbourne Cup race, the Caulfield Cup is the richest mile-and-a-half (2400m) handicap in the world with $5 million in Caulfield Cup prize money now up for grabs. The current Caulfield Cup winners’ cheque is for a lucrative $3 million.
The very first Caulfield Cup winner was Newminster when the classic race was inaugurated in 1979. The first dual Caulfield Cup winner was Poseidon (1906-07) who was also the first of the current 11 Caulfield Cup winners to go on to win the Melbourne Cup in the same year with his success in the 1906 edition of the two mile classic.
The other Caulfield Cup winners along with Poseidon (1906) to complete the Spring Cups double with a win in Flemington’s Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday of November are The Trump (1937), Rivette (1939), Rising Fast (1954), Even Stevens (1962), Galilee (1966), Gurner’s Lane (1982), Let’s Elope (1991), Doriemus (1995), Might And Power (1997) and most recently Ethereal (2001).
The most successful Caulfield Cup jockey has been Scobie Breasley with five Caulfield Cup wins in 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945 and 1952. The most successful trainer is undoubtedly Bart Cummings with seven wins with Galilee (1966), Big Philou (1969), Leilani (1974), Ming Dynasty (1977 & 1980), Let’s Elope (1991) and Viewed ( 2009).
International raiders are finding themselves on the Caulfield Cup winners list more and more and overseas champions of the race include Taufan’s Melody (1998), All The Good (2008), Dunaden (2012), Admire Rakti (2014), Best Solution (2018) and most recently Mer De Glace (2019) who became the sixth internationally-trained Caulfield Cup winner.
One of the longest-priced Caulfield Cup winners in recent history was the Lindsay Park-trained Boom Time (2017) who scored a shock win at $51 odds.
In 2020 the Chris Waller-trained Verry Elleegant became the latest Caulfield Cup favourite to win and the 22nd mare in history to take out the event. She would return in the spring of 2021 and go on to win the famous Melbourne Cup race over the two miles at Flemington.
There was another favourite heading the Caulfield Cup 2021 results when the Peter Moody-trained Incentivise won by 3.5 lengths.
The 2022 Caulfield Cup results saw trainer Chris Waller enjoy a second win in three years with Durston ($18) making history as the first emergency runner to salute in the 145th edition.
The 2023 Caulfield Cup results saw the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained import Without A Fight ($8.50) salute in a narrow thriller when defeating his former stablemate, UK raider and beaten favourite West Wind Blows, by a long neck.
