Eskimo Prince Stakes 2017 Betting: Omei Sword Favourite

Chris Waller’s returning Golden Rose runner-up Omei Sword is the dominant and firming favourite to win first-up in the 2017 Eskimo Prince Stakes betting markets for Sydney on Saturday.

Running as Royal Randwick Race 6 at 3:45pm (AEDT), the $150,000 Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) field features a stellar line-up of some of the best young Sydney and Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival contenders.

One of those is Waller’s untapped High Chaparral filly Omei Sword who races for the first time since her second to Astern – early favourite to win the world’s new richest turf race the $10 million The Everest in October – in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) last September.

Waller chose not to press on with Omei Sword after that over a mile in the Flight Stakes or take her to Melbourne last spring for a shot at the Thousand Guineas.

Instead she has been out in the paddock maturing and after two lead-up trials she will be fit and flying from barrier three with Hugh Bowman booked for the ride.

Bowman rides Omei Sword for the first time since her successful debut at Rosehill in September last year, but partnered her for both her hit-outs in January.

First-up last time in the filly won the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) and she will only improve on what she does on Saturday heading towards later autumn features including Melbourne’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in March.

Four of the other eight three-year-olds in the Eskimo Prince Stakes betting markets are under $10 for the win including Bezel ($5.50) for trainer John O’Shea and the powerhouse Godolphin stable.

The Street Cry colt was last seen running third only a quarter-length beaten in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) during the Cup Carnival at Flemington.

He won three on the trot prior to that, comes from the right connections and will get a good run fresh from barrier four with James Doyle riding.

Carbine Club Stakes winner Comin’ Through also resumes in the Eskimo Prince Stakes field for Waller, the gun Fastnet Rock colt paying $7.50 to pick up where he left off with a win.

Comin’ Through is also nominated for the 2017 Australian Guineas and may find the 1200m a little sharp on the weekend.

The other single figure fancies are the Kris Lees-trained stakes winning Northern Meteor colt Guard Of Honour ($7) coming off a first-up third over 1000m at the track on January 21 and the in-form Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Snitzel colt Spending To Win ($8) who ran second in the same lead-up race last month.

The value punt in the line-up meanwhile could shape-up as Godolphin’s other runner Bryneich ($10) who Brenton Avdulla rides second-up.

Avdulla rode the progressive Lonhro colt for his returning four and a half-length romp home on January 20 over 1250m at Canterbury where Bryneich looked every bit a star in the making.
