The John O’Shea-trained Mogador has opened narrow favourite to win his first black type when running at Caulfield Racecourse this Wednesday in the lucrative Blue Sapphire Stakes 2015.
Due to jump as Caulfield Race 6 at 4:28pm (AEST), this year’s $350,000 Listed Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) features a small but classy field of just eight three-year-olds.
Two of those are battling for favouritism in the latest Blue Sapphire Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the race this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival!
Currently leading the Blue Sapphire Stakes betting battle at $3.20 and drawn the outside alley with Craig Williams to ride is Godolphin’s Lonhro colt Mogador, a winner of two of his four starts to date.
His last start was a victory over 1000m at Warwick Farm first-up on September 23, Wednesday is first run in stakes company since a fourth to stablemate and subsequent Golden Rose winner Exosphere in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) in late February.
Hot on Mogador’s heels in the markets at $3.30 is the early market mover Kinglike ($3.80 into $3.30) who is set to get the run of the race from barrier one with big race specialist Glen Boss in the saddle.
Prepared locally by Peter Moody, Exceed And Excel colt Kinglike has won two of his three starts with a 1200m win at Moonee Valley in late May and a last start win on September 12 at Flemington with Boss aboard in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m).
With Boss in the saddle again, an easier field of rivals, winning form over the distance and barrier one Kinglike will be fitter off his last victory and looks the one to beat.
Equal on $3.30 for the win is the ultra-consistent Keen Array, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Bel Esprit gelding last seen winning his third race at start number six at Moonee Valley on Turnbull Stakes Day with an impressive two and a half-length victory over 1200m.
The other single figure hope after the win at juicier odds is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Redoute’s Choice colt Raphael’s Cat ($9) coming off a second to Kinglike in the Danehill.
He goes up one kilo to 57kg at set weights and jumps from barrier seven with Blake Shinn retaining the ride.
At a longer price but still with claims is then Haptic ($11), the other O’Shea-trained runner in the line-up third-up for the season after a third in the Group 2 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill and a second to Counterattack in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on September 19.
Wednesday is Haptic’s first run in Melbourne, and how he handles the other way of racing is key to his chances of scoring an upset Blue Sapphire Stakes result.
Also in the mix are the Tom Hughes-trained black-type winning Lonhro colt Black Vanquish ($19) drawn well in barrier two looking to atone for a seventh in the Danehill first-up and Waterhouse’s other runner Dark Steel ($21) last seen crossing 12th in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).
