Tuesday Joy’s Racing Career at an End

Melbourne Cup hopeful Tuesday Joy has been retired and is expected to begin her stud career immediately.

The decision was made by the mare’s trainer Gai Waterhouse and owner John Singleton after a listless track gallop at Randwick yesterday morning.

Waterhouse stated the six year old has been struggling to regain her gallop ever since her return from the Dubai Duty Free in March.

Tuesday Joy finished a dismal ninth place in the race and it seems she has not recovered from the long distance to and from Dubai.

The mare had another bad start last Friday in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm.

This Spring Carnival will mark the third time the group 1 champion will miss out on the Melbourne Cup after suffering from equine influenza in 2007 and bleeding during a lead-up race in the 2008 carnival.

This second incident led to a three month ban and after an injury scare which was later found to be nothing, Tuesday Joy returned to the track a little fatter and less prepared than usual.

However thanks to the outstanding training from Waterhouse, the mare was a definite hopeful for the Melbourne Cup.

Tuesday Joy has won 7 of her 24 starts including the BMW stakes, Ranvet Stakes, Chipping Norton Stakes and Coolmore Classic, taking home more than $3.2 million in prize money.

With her racing career over, the half sister to 2003 AJC Australian Oaks winner Sunday Joy, will now be served by More Than Ready this spring.

However Singleton has not ruled out sending the mare to Kentucky to be served by Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown.

With Tuesday Joy out of the spring campaign, Singleton is now focusing on his Bart Cummings trained gelding Joe Blow.
