Ken Key Aims For First Group One Win in 2014 Caulfield Guineas

Three-year-old Rich Enuff is the odds-on favourite ahead of Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), which means trainer Ken Keys is that much closer to the Group One win that has eluded him after 30 years of training.

A fact that leaves Keys feeling both confident and nervous as the race approaches.

“I haven’t stopped playing things through my mind,” Keys told Sky Racing.

“I lie awake at night thinking about the race.”

Rich Enuff will step up to the mile distance for the first time, which leaves a few pundits questioning his ability to stay the distance. However he’s still the odds-on favourite for the Guineas, available for $2.40 at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Keys is confident the Written Tycoon-colt will handle the trip with ease, using his half-brother Lightenuff’s success at 2000m as evidence.

“His half-brother Lightenuff won at 2000-metres, so on that score it doesn’t bother me,” Keys said.

“We could be proved wrong on that, but in our mind we have no doubt he will run it.”

Rich Enuff heads to the 2014 Caulfield Guineas with three back-to-back wins following a great start to his 2014 spring racing campaign.

The colt began with a win in August’s Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) before taking out the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) last month. He’s in-form following a strong gallop at Cranbourne on Tuesday morning.

“He went over 1200 (metres) in evens and a strong last half-mile [at Cranbourne], and he needed it,” Keys said.

“It was a good clean up for him as he hadn’t had a proper gallop since he last raced.”

But Keys is well aware his first Group One win won’t be easy. The trainer has singled out Shooting To Win ($7) and Looks Like The Cat ($5.50), runner-up to Rich Enuff in his last two starts, as his main rivals.

“Obviously [Shooting To Win] looked pretty good the other day and the `Cat’ looks like he’ll be suited over the extra 200 metres also,” Snowden told Sky Racing.

“They’ll be going forward and I guess we will be also.

“It’s now who can run out the mile and I’m confident we can.”
