The Michael Freedman trained Apocalyptic may have had just the two starts to date but already the emerging daughter of Extreme Choice is being highly favoured as one of the all-in equal favourites among the 106 fillies in the 2025 Thousand Guineas nominations.

Nominations closed on Tuesday for both the Group 1 $1.5 million Thousand Guineas (1600m), which runs on Caulfield Cup Day on October 18, and the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) held a week earlier.

The Caulfield Guineas drew 119 early entries including two fillies, while the numbers were slightly down on the girls’ equivalent this season.

2025 Thousand Guineas Nominations: Quick Glance

  • 106 nominations in total
  • Three fillies – Apocalyptic, Biologics and Within The Law – share $7 equal early favouritism through Ladbrokes.com.au
  • 5 entries for last year’s winning trainer Ciaron Maher
  • 7 nominees for three-time winning trainer Chris Waller
  • Miss Celine and Cherish Me also hold a nomination for the Caulfield Guineas

It is a wide-open affair in the futures Thousand Guineas odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au with three fillies currently sharing equal $7 favouritism in the markets including Apocalyptic who strode into contention for the Group 1 spring races with a stunning three-year-old debut last weekend.

She was runner-up behind Gallo Nero, who subsequently ran third in the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January, on debut at Randwick in late December.

Ciaron Maher chases back-to-back Thousand Guineas wins with five nominees including the also Caulfield Guineas nominated Cherish Me!

Apocalyptic then resumed in the Group 2 Furious Stakes and secured a narrow but convincing maiden win against a line-up of more seasoned rivals.

She is now right in the mix for both the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m), which brings Sydney’s Princess Series to a close at Randwick on October 4, as well as the Thousand Guineas further south later that month.

The other co-favourites for the Thousand Guineas this season are the Grahame Begg trained Biologics and Group 1 Champagne Stakes runner-up Within The Law.

A daughter of I Am Invincible, Biologics has had just one career start to date when she saluted at Pakenham by over two lengths over 1200m in mid-May showing early potential to see out a strong mile race this time in.

Within The Law meanwhile is better tried with Bjorn Baker‘s daughter of Lucky Vega having atoned for throwing her hoop and failing to finish in the Golden Slipper when third in the Group 2 Percy Sykes and second in the Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old.

She has already had two runs this time in when runner-up on a Heavy (10) in the Group 2 Silver Shadow and fifth in the Furious when forced back from barrier 13 of 13 before finishing off her final 100m very strongly.

Alpha Sofie ($11) is another early standout nominee for Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman with the daughter of Capitalist having won her third on the trot taking out the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at The Valley last Saturday by an impressive two lengths.

Legendary Kiwi horseman Mark Walker has a huge hand nominating for a bumper crop of 11 led by Super Seth filly La Dorada ($11) who is now based in his Cranbourne stable.

Winner of the Karaka 2YO Millions and Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce across the Tasman, La Dorada was luckless in her Australian race debut when thrown in the deep end against the older sprint stars to run second last (13th) in last weekend’s Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

Back against her own kind over further she’s expected to be far more competitive in a race like the Thousand Guineas.

“She copped a lot of bumps in what was visually a messy race but to be honest I thought she did well enough to hold her weight and we all know she’s better over a (more) suitable distance, so I thought she’s done well enough,” her Moir jockey Luke Cartwright said post-race.

Ciaron Maher won the Thousand Guineas last year with Another Prophet and chases back-to-back wins as a trainer with five entries including Cherish Me who is also one of the two Caulfield Guineas nominated fillies along with Miss Celine and the undefeated Vivid Sun.

Three-time Thousand Guineas winning trainer Chris Waller, whose latest victory came with Joliestar (2023), has seven nominees this season but all are currently at 50/1 or longer.

Golden Slipper champion Marhoona, and the Annabel & Rob Neasham trained Champagne Stakes third placegetter and Furious Stakes runner-up Tupakara are other notable hopes in the mix.
