Anamoe Heads 2021 Caulfield Guineas Field & Betting Markets

The James Cummings-trained Anamoe is looking to atone for a lead-up second in Sydney’s Golden Rose heading to Melbourne on Saturday as the widely-drawn favourite for the Caulfield Guineas 2021.

A capacity field of three-year-old milers do battle in the Group 1 $2 million Neds Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on the weekend with the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the Godolphin-raced Street Boss colt Anamoe.

The young star has already amassed over $2 million in stakes with four wins from nine starts including the autumn’s Group 1 Inglis Sires’ over 1400m in April.

He was good first-up winning the Group 2 Run To The rose (1200m) before going down narrowly as the beaten odds-on favourite in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) behind In The Congo on September 25.

Third-up and fit he goes up to a mile in the Caulfield Guineas field but has work to do from barrier 15 with Damien Oliver coming aboard for the ride.

Anamoe returns to Melbourne for the first time since his good third in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) as a two-year-old at Caulfield and despite the wide draw he remains the $2.50 top elect.

The danger occupying the second line of Caulfield Guineas betting at $3.50 is the Blue Diamond Stakes winner from the autumn Artorious.

The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Flying Artie colt chases his first victory since but has been strong in his three lead-up runs this prep.

He enjoyed back-to-back seconds in Melbourne before his fourth under two lengths beaten in the Golden Rose and back south up to a mile looks a genuine hope to get the better of Anamoe for a second time drawn ideally in gate two with Damian Lane in the saddle.

So dominant are the top two in the Caulfield Guineas odds this season the remainder of the field can be found at $15 or longer in the markets meaning there could be great value come Saturday.

Of the longer-priced roughies chasing an upset some of the standouts include Coastwatch, Lightsaber, Mr Mozart and Tiger Of Malay all at $15 post-final acceptances.

The Chris Waller-trained Golden Rose third placegetter Coastwatch also holds nominations for two Sydney races on Saturday including the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

Zoustar colt Lightsaber represents Peter Moody in this year’s Caulfield Guineas, Moody chasing a second success following his 2010 victory with Anacheeva.

Lightsaber has been improving with each start this time in and was good last time out winning the Prelude ahead of attempting the double Moody claimed with the aforementioned Anacheeva over a decade ago.

Mr Mozart, coming off a devastatingly close second in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at The Valley, represents last year’s winning stable with Team Hawkes having won the 2020 Caulfield Guineas with Ole Kirk.

Craig Williams meanwhile will ride the Ricard & Michael Freedman-trained Extreme Choice colt Tiger Of Malay from the inside alley, the horse having his second 1600m run after placing third in Brisbane’s Group 1 JJ Atkins as a juvenile in the winter.
