The in-form Brad Widdup-trained mare Adelong is nearing an odds-on quote in Toy Show Quality 2020 betting this weekend as she chases a fourth consecutive win going up in grade on Winx Stakes Day.
One of the key support acts at Randwick on Saturday, the Group 3 $160,000 Toy Show Quality (1100m) originally drew 11 final acceptors.
The Kris Lees-trained Witherspoon (3) was an early scratching however, Lees opting to race her in Melbourne later on Saturday afternoon against Group 1-bound Brooklyn Hustle in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) and Moonee Valley.
Hot favourite in the latest Toy Show Quality odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2 to continue her excellent form, five-year-old Adelong from Hawkesbury has just her ninth start in the quality handicap clash for fillies and mares.
Tim Clark comes aboard the daughter of Medaglia D’Oro, the mare’s latest three runs across the winter producing a trio of Rosehill wins over 1100m.
She is a genuine specialist at the distance (7:5-2-0) and she returns to Royal Randwick for the first time since her four-length romp home when carrying 58.5kg at the track and distance on Boxing Day last year.
This may be a notable class rise and acid test for Adelong, but the bookies are keeping her very safe in betting as she prepares to get through the rain-affected track carrying just 53.5kg in the Group 3.
Occupying the second line of Toy Show Quality betting this season at $5.50 is John Thompson’s multiple Group winner Sweet Deal in gate five with James McDonald aboard.
Sweet Deal is the class horse in the race and has been weighted accordingly carrying 59kg for her spring campaign kick-off.
Despite the weight, the Casino Prince six-year-old remains a chance to return to winning form for the first time since her Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) win at the track in mid-February.
Sweet Deal was last seen running fifth twice over the autumn with her latest start seeing her cross four and a half lengths off Con Te Partiro, a chance in the Group 1 Winx Stakes this weekend, in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).
That was her only official run on a Heavy track to date, so how she handles the conditions fresh on the weekend after two subsequent trials on the going at Kensington will be key to her chances.
Two other mares are also at single-figure Toy Show Quality odds to win with the Les Bridge-trained Seasons ($7) resuming from barrier two with Kerrin McEvoy aboard and the rails-drawn Invictus Salute ($9.50) for Mark Newnham.
Seasons looks well-weighted with just 53kg on her back first-up, the proven wet-tracker having career start number 12 following her fourth at Rosehill with the same weight beaten 2.6 lengths in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) on March 21.
Invictus Salute is also in on the 53kg minimum this weekend, the Exceed And Excel five-year-old to be ridden by Rachel King with the mare out to atone for her 14th in the Birthday Card Stakes.
Her form on Heavy going is excellent however (4:1-2-1), and she looked eye-catching in a recent trial win from August 14 that featured Splintex (2nd) and Dame Giselle (3rd).
