Comin’ Through on Epsom Handicap 2017 Path

After a narrow first-up win in Sydney on the weekend, it is full steam ahead towards the 2017 Epsom Handicap for the Chris Waller-trained Comin’ Through.

At Royal Randwick on Saturday, the Fastnet Rock stallion made his four-year-old debut winning the $100,000 Broccolini Handicap (1400m) by a quarter-length over stablemate Life Less Ordinary.

It was the first of an eventual two Waller-trained quinellas on the card that were highlighted by a heroic last-to-first performance by the world’s best Winx over Foxplay in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).

Go Bloodstock-raced Comin’ Through has now won three of his eight career starts, including most notably the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) over the Flemington mile last Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The horse’s subsequent autumn campaign earlier this year in Sydney included a number of eye-catching performances, headlined by his brave third just two lengths off the winner Inference in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) run on a Heavy (10) track.

Comin’ Through backed-up from that Group 1 minor placing in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), also contested on a mud track, but failed to run out the extra distance crossing over 10 lengths back eighth behind the Kiwi raider Gingernuts.

Plans this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival from Waller then are to keep the up-and-comer over a mile, with his major target being the Group 1 $1 million Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on September 30.

“Being a Fastnet Rock colt and a brother to Criterion, I’ve got to win that Group 1 with him over the shortest distance possible to build his value,” Waller told RSN on Sunday.

Waller has an imposing recent record in the Epsom Handicap results winning three of the past four editions with Boban (2013), He’s Your Man (2014) and superstar mare Winx (2015).

All three of Waller’s Epsom Handicap winners had different lead-up runs into the spring feature, leaving things open for Comin’ Through this season.

“He’ll find a lead-in [to the Epsom], I’ll keep him sharp and hopefully the mile third run in won’t be too short for him,” Waller said.

All-in Epsom Handicap betting at bookmakers have another Waller runner Egg Tart, winner foo the Group 1 Schweppes OaksQueensland Oaks double, currently installed as the $5 favourite.

Aforementioned stablemate Foxplay is at an equal $8 quote with Spectroscope, while Comin’ Through is the $13 third elect in pre-nomination odds on this year’s Epsom Handicap.

Waller also has Group 1 ambitions for the galloper who finished second to Comin’ Through on Saturday.

He is aiming European import Life Less Ordinary at the Sydney staying features including The Metropolitan 2017.

A six-year-old son of Thewayyouare, Life Less Ordinary was runner-up to Stampeded in the Wagga Cup (2000m) back in early May and looks to be finding his way again this time in.

The Group 1 $750,000 The Metropolitan (2400m) runs on the same day as the Epsom.

The 2017 Epsom Handicap nominations along with those for The Metropolitan are due out on September 4.
