Vega Magic Claims Strong Win in Regal Roller Stakes

Vega Magic has continued his undefeated run of form since transferring to care of Lindsay Park; maintaining to the line well to win the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield this afternoon.

Winner of the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in May and attracted plenty of attention in Regal Roller Stakes betting markets ahead of his first-up task this afternoon.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Damien Oliver led the gelding towards the pace, but elected to take a position in transit just behind early leaders Lord Da Vinci and Divine Ten.

Charging clear of his rivals when the field straightened, Vega Magic was joined on pace by Japanese import Brave Smash and while he appeared to be fading in the final 100m, found a second wind and savaged the line for a half-length win.

Trainer David Hayes was thrilled with the Lope De Vega gelding’s performance and revealed that his will look to step the horse out to 1400m in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes in a fortnight.

“It’s been a fantastic day. This horse was terrific – he didn’t get too many favours from the wide draw, 60kgs and he got attacked early by the good young Japanese horse,” Hayes said.

“He gave 6kgs too, so it was a big effort.

“He’s won at 1400m in the past, the Scahill Stakes in Perth, so he’ll go to the Memsie.

“Then he’ll be freshened-up and hopefully someone wants him for The Everest. I am thinking he’ll run huge in the Memsie and he’ll be snapped up.”

Vega Magic began his racing career under the guidance of Scott Casey in Perth in June of 2015 and has subsequently posted eleven wins and three minors through only sixteen career starts.

Brave Smash will only take benefit from his impressive performance and was luckless when blocked for a run early in the straight, while Santa Ana Lane was also strong to the line in finishing third.
