Chris Waller‘s brilliant mare Fangirl secured her second win in the $1 million 7 Stakes when narrowly denying rival and stablemate Lindermann over the Randwick mile on Saturday.

She had two lengths to spare on the line over Think It Over in the same race last spring, but this year’s 7 Stakes result went down to the wire with Fangirl saluting in a photo thriller to continue her outstanding record at the track and trip.

Fangirl will next head to the King Charles III Stakes on October 18 as part of The Everest Day looking to win that race for a second time!

Returning to Sydney after a game fourth fresh behind Treasurethe Moment in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield – a race that is turning out to be the form line to follow – Fangirl relished the step up in distance and getting back to her pet track.

“Forget her run last start at Caulfield,” Waller said.

“She just didn’t get around the track as well as we would have liked, and back at home today she was awesome.”

Ridden by the master James McDonald, the seven-year-old daughter of Sebring came from well back to charge down the home straight before lunging right on the line to down the front-running Lindermann by a nose in an all-Waller quinella.

“She’s so good, I love her dearly. She’s such a thrill to ride and every time she gives her heart out there, she’s a line chaser,” McDonald told Sky Thoroughbred Central after the win.

“She got in a lovely spot, found the fence, saved ground, and got out with enough time.

“He (Lindermann) fought harder than I thought. Credit to him, he fought when I came up to him.

“I felt like I was going to have it easier and then he fought, but Fangirl was too strong.”

In a distant third two lengths further beaten was the consistent Joe Pride trained Ceolwulf.

It was the right result for the punters with Fangirl the short $2.05 favourite, but Waller was equally impressed with the performance of the beaten horse who never gave up the fight.

“It was an intriguing race,” he said.

“Lindermann, I thought was rolling along at pretty good sectionals, and I thought, well, he’ll be vulnerable late, but he kept fighting hard.

“I actually thought Lindermann won, but when it’s a stable mate fighting out the photo finish, you’re not too concerned.”

Waller has confirmed plans for Fangirl to race next up in the $5 million Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m), an event she won in 2023 before her sixth to Ceolwulf last year, on The Everest Day (October 18).

“That’s her race. She loves the mile, she loves Randwick, nothing more to say. Four weeks’ time, it’ll be a big day,” he said.

Futures 2025 King Charles III Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au have Fangirl in from $4 to $3 favouritism with her younger stablemate Autumn Glow next best at $3.50.
