The wins continued for Chris Waller‘s outstanding filly Lady Shenandoah who again beat home Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot in the 2025 Surround Stakes results on Saturday at Randwick in a repeat of the Light Fingers’ quinella from a fortnight back.

Waller’s star daughter of Snitzel made it three-from-three at Royal Randwick with her narrow but impressive 0.29 length win in the Group 1 $750,000 Surround Stakes (1400m) on Verry Ellegant Stakes Day.

Jockey James McDonald celebrated his second Surround Stakes success following a 2015 victory aboard Ghisoni a decade ago when guiding this year’s odds-on favourite to a win for the punters.

For Waller it was also his second time in the Surround Stakes winners’ stall after his first with Hinged back in 2021.

Lady Shenandoah ($1.30F) celebrated her second elite level win after her Group 1 Flight Stakes triumph over the Randwick mile in the spring.

She came off a win fresh in the traditional Surround Stakes lead-up having claimed the Group 2 Light Finger Stakes at the track on February 15 when also beating home the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott trained Lady Of Camelot.

It was a brave effort by the eye-catching runner-up who was narrowly denied right on the line by Lady Shenandoah who drove through for a gritty win in the day’s opening Group 1.

Also hailing from the Waller stable was the third placed Lazzura who crossed some three lengths back as a 25/1 outsider to complete the Surround Stakes trifecta.

It was Lilac in front up the rise leading them towards the finishing post before the ladies came!

Lady Shenandoah moved from third to cruise up on the outside of Lady Of Camelot who had also enjoyed a charmed on-speed run settled second throughout.

The two battled it out in another exciting finish with Lady Of Camelot showing plenty of fight to stick on with the job before the eventual Surround Stakes winner extended her neck in the final stride to snare the Group 1 trophy.

“I could see that she accelerated but wasn’t quite clear, and then I realised it was Lady Of Camelot – she’s a Golden Slipper winner – so I knew that the Waterhouse/Bott horse was going to be hard to go past. She was – and lifted,” Waller told Sky Thoroughbred Cental.

“It was good to see Lady Shenandoah fight and be dominant. It just shows you how hard it is to win races, any race let alone a Group 1 race. It was a good fight over the last 100-metres. I don’t know how the punters were feeling.”

A potential next-up run against the older mares in Rosehill‘s Group 1 $1 million Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 15 is now pending for Lady Shenandoah who has firmed into $3 favouritism through Ladbrokes.com.au in their all-in markets.

Waller also said that, while it was unlikely, the stable could also still consider a Group 1 $4 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) bid on April 5 with Lady Shenandoah.

“It wouldn’t be normal for our stable to put them in a Doncaster at this early age. I’d say it is unlikely, but I’ll talk to the owners. It is easier said than done,” he said.

The filly is also leading the latest all-in 2025 Doncaster Mile odds online at $5 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
