The Golden Slipper could be on the cards for well-tried filly Erno’s Cube who did plenty wrong but still managed to finish over the top of her rivals narrowly in the Reisling Stakes 2024 results at Randwick.
The Ciaron Maher-trained daughter of Rubick was the most experienced filly in this year’s Group 2 $300,000 Reisling Stakes (1200m) field.
That experience paid off on race day as she posted win number two at start number six.
Jason Collett had plenty of faith in the up-and-comer who got dragged back one off the fence second last throughout.
Erno’s Cube ($3.70) had to work hard to get into the race but came with a terrific late run over the closing stages to round them up and finish ahead of the Godolphin-raced Silmarillion ($4.60).
“She is still improving physically, mentally still doing plenty wrong. From that gate it was always going to be a bit tricky,” stable rep Johann Gerard-Bubord told Sky Thoroughbred Racing.
“She didn’t help herself early, once she got a bit of cover she dropped the bridle and it was a good effort to be able to quicken and get her nose in front.”
Race favourite Too Darn Lizzie ($3.10F), having her first start since taking out the Magic Millions Fillies Debut race at the Gold Coast in mid-January, showed plenty of early speed to take up front running.
She led onto the straight and dug deep showing plenty of fight to keep coming as the challengers came and finish third completing the Reisling Stakes trifecta.
Erno’s Cube meanwhile was fourth to Storm Boy in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast and came off a third behind Straight Charge at Rosehill in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m).
Maher and fellow connections are now likely to consider running her back against the colts and geldings in the Group 1 $4.92 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 23.
The Reisling Stakes – Golden Slipper double hasn’t been completed since Estijaab (2018).
The price on Erno’s Cube to be the next has firmed with the latest all-in Golden Slipper 2024 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au in from $51 to $34.
She could also be kept for a Randwick target on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’ in April with the Group 2 $1 million Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) an attractive option.
“We will see how she comes through it first. Obviously, the Slipper is always tempting but the boys seem to be better than the fillies this year,” Gerard-Bubord said.
“She’d gone two weeks from the Silver Slipper, so the right thing to do would be to give her a bit of time and go to the Percy Sykes, but we’ll see how she comes through it.
“It’s a discussion to have also now she is a Group Two winner.
“She has been going for a long time, she’s had a little freshen between races but she seems to handle her racing very well.”
Erno’s Cube pays $11 in pre-field Percy Sykes Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au available in full here.
Collett meanwhile was full of post-ride praise and happy to say Erno’s Cube could be competitive in the Slipper.
“She’s qualified now, so she’ll be worth a crack,” he said.
“She’s in form and although she still does a few things wrong, you’ll get a good tempo in the Slipper so probably won’t have to worry about that head coming up on me early.”
