The Chris Waller-trained Lindermann was given an absolute peach of a ride by one of the country’s best tactical hoops Nash Rawiller to lead all-the-way and narrowly hold off the short-priced favourite Pericles in a thrilling 2023 Rosehill Guineas result.

Smart Lonhro colt Lindermann franked the local Sydney form in the Group 1 $600,000 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) improving on his lead-up second to Communist in the Randwick Guineas over a mile to salute in the Golden Slipper Day showdown.
“He’s a real gentle giant, he’s a big boy. Nash woke him up two starts ago when he won over 1400m here and it has been the making of him,” Waller told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-win.
“He has really learned to fight and at the same time matured as a man. He showed us a glimpse of ability at Flemington back during Cup week at 1800 and from that point on we said, ‘we’ll set him for this race’. It doesn’t always come off but it has today.
“He ran a good second in the (Randwick) Guineas last start and he did all the work today.”
With the temperatures rising at Rosehill Gardens the favourite Pericles for James Cummings looked a mess pre-race sweating up a lather and failing to settle even behind the barriers.
The last start Group 2 Autumn Classic winner in Melbourne however jumped well and did the stalking getting up into second and finally settling well for jockey James McDonald.
Rawiller meanwhile allowed Lindermann to rev up and roll forward, cruising across with no pressure to lead the Rosehill Guineas field around.
In a master stroke that proved the winning move Rawiller really went for home at the 700m upping the pace and applying the pressure early.
Once on the home straight the eventual Rosehill Guineas winner moved three or four off the fence with Pericles quickly stoked up by McDonald at the 350m and sticking to the task well.
The favourite levelled up to the front-runner at the 200m with Lindermann looking beaten.
The pace-maker however rallied late and was enormous posting a deserved win off an absolute 10 out of 10 tactical display from Rawiller who took total control of the race.
After going stride for stride over the final furlong Pericles ($2.30F) took one final lunge right on the line but it wasn’t enough and top honours went to the brave Lindermann ($6.50).
In a gap back to third rounding out the Rosehill Guineas 2023 trifecta was Williamsburg ($12).
It could be onwards and upwards for Lindermann now heading towards the Group 1 $2 million Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 1.
Criterion (2014) was the last horse to complete the Rosehill Guineas – Australian Derby double.
Updated all-in 2023 Australian Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on Lindermann to be the next have firmed right in from $26 to $7 for Lindermann to be the next and are available in by clicking here.
Waller however said that a drop back to 1600m could be a better option for Lindermann with the richer Group 1 $4 million Doncaster Mile run on the same day as the Derby.
“I think he’d have a better chance of going back to a Doncaster. It’s good to have options,” the master trainer said.
Current 2023 Doncaster Mile odds at Ladbrokes.com.au – available in full here – have Lindermann at $26 to become the first three-year-old winner of the event since Brutal (2019).
Rawiller confirmed the opinion that Lindermann may not be suited to the 2400m of the ATC Derby even saying he’d like to see him targeted for the Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) in October.
“I had a lot of faith in him. I don’t think he’s a Derby horse but he’s a deadset Rosehill Guineas horse,” he said.
“I’d like to think he’d be in the Cox Plate in the spring.
“Full credit to him, he’s done his job now.
“I’d hate to think he’s going to the Derby because he doesn’t deserve that.
“He’s a quick genuine miler, strong 2000m horse. God bless him, his ticker and will to win got him through today.”
